Independent candidate wins county council by-election

Helen Grant, the Independent candidate, has been elected councillor for the Central Richmondshire division of North Yorkshire County Council.

The election, which was triggered by the resignation of councillor Melva Steckles, took place yesterday.

The results of the poll were:

Helen Mary Grant, Independent, 588 votes
Stephanie Laura Todd, Conservative, 553 votes
Eric Beechey, Labour, 205 votes.

In all, 1,349 votes (including three spoiled votes) were cast, representing a 20.15% of the electorate of 6,695.
