Saw a nice mantis outside the house yesterday doing a bit of sunbathing.

+Vincent Knight and +Paul Harper, I saw this post on twitter and found this guy's webpage and it seemed right up your alley. Visualizations of queuing systems (traffic).

Sometimes I think all of my data is poo-delimited.

Yeah, but how do I install it? Looks a bit low res, but as a proof of concept it's leaps and bounds ahead of the other method. I like how it gives you a fully printable model at the end, without the need to fill in all those pointcloud holes that you get from both methods. I wonder how their software would work if given simultaneous input from many cameras, rather than as a video. Very cool

One of favorite places for "emergency" food when we run out of time is called Chick Peas. It's a Mediterranean place that has shawarma and falafel. Aside from maybe the meat, the food there seems very healthy overall. Loads of veggies on most of the plates they serve. My 3 year old son Austin actually likes this place and loves their falafel (please no one tell him what they are). Anyway, he mispronounced falafel, as fa-waffle, and I thought that was really funny. But, I thought about it some more and thought that actually it's a really good idea. Sadly, others have thought of this already ,so Austin's first trademark will have to wait. :/
Makes me want to go buy a waffle iron.

Saw this on Reddit. I see this more and more. Looking back at my grandfathers generation they had good job security and had social mobility. My fathers generation had that pulled from under them a bit and some of this started but there were still plenty of opportunities. Now... It seems like most corporations are starting to lean towards the system that Amazon is being called out on. People are dispensable to many of these businesses. Not all are doing this. Recently Netflix announced a year off for having a child or adopting one for both parents. But these seem less frequent. I know that in Europe there's a lot of post-docs floating around getting short term contracts for years and years. More contracting, less full time employees.
I know why they do it. It's easier to get rid of you when times are bad and reduces internal overhead for HR, but his is where we are going wrong as a society. When we group-think ("mob mentality") we forget that people are people. It's just a number on a piece of paper that you're letting go. Its difficult from the other perspective too. If someone is genuinely dead wood, you should be empowered to move on from them.
I don't claim to have all the answers, but the Amazon story really bugs me and I'm starting to rethink how much business I do with them.

Was at Costco yesterday for some basics and saw this. Normally I'm not a car person, but these high end electrics that are coming out of Tesla are something else. The red color probably makes it go faster too. Not that it needs it, it's a P85D.

Freaky "weather" tonight. I'm told there is a fire about 30 miles away at Lake Berryessa and take producing so much smoke that the sun is "lookable" and very red. If it weren't a fire I'd think it was cooler.

Excellent images coming from New Horizon of Pluto and Charon. I've made this one my background in protest of the relegation to "Dwarf" planet. Take that +*!

In all seriousness, this is cool.
