We ran into this little guy as he was trying to cross a dirt road out in the back country of Death Valley.  He was just checking us out.  Never tried to strike us as we ushered him to safety.

Nice capture +Lori Hibbett ! I've had a handful of friendly encounters with our resident western rattlesnakes over the years - Sequoia Nat'l Park, and a couple different East Bay Regional Parks. Sometimes, I even think of exercising the camera. I'd have to go dig through several boxes of slides to find even the most recent crossing of paths with one.

I do believe I see movement in your reptilian friend's tail. Unlike most humans, they are kind enough to not hide their sense of frustration with us in their proximity.

Southern Nevada had lots of rain this past winter and spring.  Cacti are loving it by showing lots of blooms!

We'll be heading back out to Bodie only 5 times this summer for night photography.  The park is limiting access.  That's fine with us.  We've selected the best milky way nights which also mean your star trail shots will be chock full of stars, just like this one.  You can learn night photography in a cool location.

After a fun day of snow shoeing in the freshly fallen snow we drove around this lovely little ranching community on our way home.  The clouds broke up and made for some nice dramatic skies.  Cheers!

Last Friday at Sunset there was a conjunction of Mars, Venus and the Crescent moon.  I opted to run down to Lone Pine and capture the moment over Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48 states of the USA.  It was chilly but beautiful!

One more from my travels to Death Valley this spring.  It's starting to get hot there so we tried to take advantage of a few long weekends to visit the park.

How to stay cool in Death Valley...find these massive granite walls that are cold to the touch, a strong diurnal wind forms between the heat outside and the coolness in the slot canyon.  You almost need a jacket when its nearly 90 degrees outside.

One of the nice things about running workshops in Bodie is we have the park to ourselves during sunset, golden hour, blue hour and then until 1 a.m.  The shooting option without people in them are endless.  Then we come back in the park before sunrise and get too shoot the inside of the buildings.  I can't wait for this years workshops to start.  It is so much fun!   If you want to join us the dates and sign up info can be found here http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/

Sky on Fire.
Sunrise one morning last week.  I didn't think the color would happen to this extent so I wasn't set up at the shore.  Silly me!

Introduction
After growing up in the LA area where I obtained my BS in Business Management at Pepperdine University and taught wilderness survival for UCLA and CSUN, I moved briefly to Texas then to Nor Cal where I raised a beautiful family.  I recently relocated to the eastern sierra to be closer to my beloved mountains.

I am self employed which gives me freedom to travel when I want to.  When I moved to the eastern sierra I had to reinvent myself and my career.  It is working out beautifully and my business is taking off -- so much so that my freedom to hit the road it a little less these day.  But that's okay.

I still take to the high country with backpack on when time and weather permits.

In my travels I've had the opportunity to consume some very interesting food items: Rotten Shark, puffin and ptarmigan in Iceland, Guinea Pig in Peru, rattlesnake, marmot and other creatures from the high sierra during my survival teaching days. My dad was a big hunter so we had lots of venison, elk, bear, boar as well.
