Reading this and other articles about developers working on email clients with good encryption built-in. Don't you have to figure that the day after they announced they were working on it they got a National Security Letter ordering them to put in trapdoors?

I remember playing with PGP in the early 90's. So cool, built on a simple brilliant concept (public key/private key). I set up my public key and was all set to go... except nobody else was. What a pity. We'd have some great communications privacy now if that had taken off.

BTW, is anybody else amused at the "public shock" over the activities of the NSA? Like what, we didn't see this coming? Like what, we had no idea that a) the capability existed, and b) the NSA was using it? LOL.

My primary worry is that I'm embedded among idiots in an industrialized country that is second only to Turkey in its willingness to deny the very science that gives its population additional decades in which to be imbeciles.

It's like the anti-vax crazies.  It's all fine and dandy until herd immunity drops to a point at which you've got polio in your neighborhood.  It's fine if the local Hutterites do their thing as long as they don't blow science and technology for the rest of us.  But the US religious crazies are actively and purposely blowing it for the rest of us and it's no longer cute or tolerable.

My gloves are off.  It's not okay to condone ignorance of science and allow the United States to sink into intellectual squalor for a few decades.

I was curious so I looked it up. Of the 12 humans who have walked on the moon, now seven are still living.

Neil Armstrong (1930 - 2012)
Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (1930 - )
Charles "Pete" Conrad (1930 – 1999)
Alan Bean (1932 - )
Alan B. Shepard (1923 – 1998)
Edgar Mitchell (1930 - )
David Scott (1932 - )
James Irwin (1930 – 1991)
John Young  (1930 - )
Charles Duke (1935 - )
Eugene Cernan (1934 - )
Harrison H. "Jack" Schmitt (1935 - )

It's astounding to me that a woman would even consider voting for one of these new Republicans.

Heinekens commercial during the #redsox  game just now. The bar magically converting from a dive into a high-brow joint was funky, but what really caught my attention was the band and their song.

Here's the beer commercial: http://youtu.be/MZtDqpdvy7s

The song is "Love Letter" and the band is "Clairy Browne & the Bangin' Rackettes" (really!). Below is their music video of the song.

And if you like that, here's a live version. Even though the video production value is pretty low, their earthy energy really comes through.

I like these ladies.

Although I'm also a big fan of the subject matter of this piece, I'm sharing it here because I really like the video's production quality.

As someone says in the comments, videos that are actually slideshows are usually pretty bland, but this one uses some very good image selection, to illustrate an audio documentary that is NPR quality. Very nicely done.
