As much as we'd like to think of churches as safe zones, crime statistics don't back it up. Our houses of worship are no longer immune to violence. They're becoming more vulnerable. That's why protecting churches is now a hot topic and one that's creating a lot of debate in Austin.

KFDM/6 News on Fox's Angel San Juan looks into a state law that some church members believe is standing in the way of their safety. In a Special Report, Angel San Juan found that Texas is one of just three states -- Oklahoma and Florida are the other two -- that restricts church members from providing their own security.

Under Texas law, a church would have to establish itself as a security company and be licensed by the state or hire a company that is licensed by the state, which can be an expensive undertaking. However, violating the law can also be costly with fines up to thousands of dollars. Now, a group here in Southeast Texas is leading the charge to change the law.

Hedge Protection Ministries was developed for the sole purpose of assisting churches with development, implementation, and maintenance of healthy security ministries. Having been tasked with developing a security ministry in our own church, we very quickly realized there was a very limited amount of information available to churches seeking to increase the level of protection being provided to their members during their services. We have developed a step by step program that will educate, encourage and assist you through what some might consider a very daunting task. With our assistance… that task becomes a lot less daunting.

GROVES, Texas (KFDM) — As families and loved ones grieve in Sutherland Springs, Texas, following the deadliest church shooting in modern U-S history, there’s a call for more Southeast Texas (SETX) churches to increase security and arm members.

KFDM/Fox 4’s Chris Mullooly spoke with Steve Visser, co-founder of Hedge Protection Ministries a company that helps to put security measures in place at churches.

The First Baptist Church in Groves has a group of trained church members whose aim is to prevent tragic situations from occurring in church.
