We booked a table for two in Zen on Sat 25 Aug 12. During the booking process we were informed that there were two seating times available 1900 or 2115. We opted for the 2115 seating and arrived 20 minutes early. It became apparent that there were plenty of customers waiting for their tables as they were crammed into the meagre waiting space and around the bar on the bottom floor. We approached the only space available and were promptly told to move, as it was the service area of the bar. We ordered two cocktails and the abhorrent barman sneered that they didn't accept cards, it was cash only at the bar. After 50 minutes of waiting and two consultations with the restaurant manager we were informed that there was no table available as people had arrived late for the 1900 slot and hadn't ordered food till 2030! Eventually a large table was sourced upstairs and 3 couples were seated there. The wine list was quite poor and the food certainly not worth the wait or the cost. Needless to say, a disappointing experience that will not be repeated.

I went to zen for a birthday treat, and the food was not good. The starters were cold and the main dishes were of a poor standard and drowning in sauce. Side dishes were also bad and cold they classify salsa potatoes, as potatoes with literally a dribble of sweet chilli sauce on them, where's the salsa?? I did complain, but nothing was done. I will never be back.

I don't get across much to Belfast but when I was first introduced to this place I was immediatley impressed. The downstairs area is much more of a straight forward affair in terms of looks and layout - nice and simple (the only downside to my first visit, coming from Scotland, was that the smoking ban wasn't in efect yet...). A good selection in the menu was vailable so straight in to the sashimi and tempura for us it was. Service was efficient. I was surprised as to the size of portions given - in other places I've been to you'd be lucky to get even half the amount of sashimi for the prices they charge in here, and they were nice big chunks too. I was very happy... On to the teppanyaki. Again, service was good and the portions more than enough and the beef was superbly prepared. The dessert I just managed to squeeze in. When the bill came it was just about what I expected. Not too expensive at all but about right for the niche restaurant it is in a big city. Before we left I was told to go up the stairs to see the rest of the place as it was quite something to look at. And she wasn't wrong. A much more swanky affair with private boothes and and a far more upmarket feel - an interior designer's wet dream... I've been there since and will be paying another visit in the near future.
