How far away are we from a world where drones deliver packages? If Amazon is to be believed, not far at all. Others are not so sure: technical progress past this point isn’t merely a matter of invention, it’s a matter of public safety.

The global UAV industry is estimated to grow from $6.4 billion today to $91 billion by 2024. Investors have started taking note of this growth and hence a number of dedicated drone angels and VCs have begun to appear. Investment in drone startups exceeded $108 million over 29 deals in 2014, a 104% increase in backing year-on-year. In 2013, 14 drone tech firms closed their first funding rounds in the US, and last year total industry venture investments hit $65 million, with Airware and PrecisionHawk securing some of the more headline-grabbing rounds. Closer to home Aeronavics raised $1.5 million within 5 days of going live on the Snowball Effect equity crowdfunding platform. At the same time patent activity in UAV technology has increased in intensity in the last three years, meaning while it may be lucrative there may be significant competition and barriers to entry.

Innovation Liberation Front invites you to an interactive workshop " Capital Raising in UAV Tech". In this session, Simon Rowell (Innovation Liberation Front) and Arturo Pelayo (ARIA Logistics) will look at topics such as: how investment ready are you, what are VC’s and Angels looking for and what turns them off in a pitch? We will also explore the business model canvas tool as it relates to a UAV business. Finally, we will discuss how IP is a critical issue for UAV businesses: it can shut you down, help you gain capital, make it easier to engage with collaborators, and add value when you exit. We will have a panel of experts consisting of angel investors and VC’s providing their insights about some of these issues.

We hope you can join us!

The value of Apple’s brand was $124.2 billion in 2014. Microsoft’s brand was worth $63 billion. And Google’s brand was worth $56.6 billion. That’s big money. Even if your company’s brand isn’t worth as much Apple, Microsoft, or Google, it’s worth protecting.

It's the coolest sport you've never heard of, and now drone racing is exploding across New Zealand. Two leagues have kicked off since January, with the first national championship already underway, and a trans-Tasman battle planned for later in the year.
