Here is a clip during the Lunar Eclipse on the 15th. It was an amazing experience and it was so quiet I could hear the ocean gently in the background.

+Carlos Rafael Moreno It was so cloudy after dark I was worried. Clear as a bell when I woke to video. Then in the morning it was cloudy again. Truly lucky Carlos.

Total Lunar Eclipse ion the 14th and 15th depending on where you live (if you live in the Western Hemisphere.
This spectacle of celestial shadows will be the first of two total lunar eclipses that North America will be able to observe in 2014. Unlike an eclipse of the sun, an eclipse of the moon presents no hazards to the viewer. No precautions to protect the eye

The other day we captured a whale and pod of dolphins swimming by. It was so cool to experience it. They were so close to shore.

I wish all my female G+er's a wonderful International Women's Day March 8th.

Hedy Lamarr: Charm, Beauty and Genius

March 8 is celebrated as the International Women's Day. Through this post, I want to help dispel one of the clichés about women: that one which considers beautiful women as devoid of intelligence.

For this reason, I dedicate this post to Hedy Lamarr, a phenomenally beautiful, intelligent, creative, witty, passionate woman, who in addition to being a world famous movie star, she was a visionary inventor twenty years ahead of her time.

Hedy Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna on November 9, 1914. In the late 1920's Hedy was discovered and brought to Berlin by Max Reinhardt.

In 1933 Hedy achieved international renown when she played the first nude scenes in cinematic history in the Czech film Ecstasy. The film was banned in many countries around the world, including the United States.
On August 10, 1933, Hedy Kiesler married Austrian industrialist Fritz Mandl, CEO of one of the world's leading arms manufacturers. While her husband forbade her to pursue her acting career, (attempting to buy up all existing copies of Ecstasy), this proved to be one of the most valuable relationships to the scientific technology she would develop years later.

She fled her country and husband in 1937. On the voyage to America she was signed to a $500 a week contract by MGM's Louis B. Mayer. She also took on the new last name "Lamarr," meaning "the sea" (La Mar.)
Often called The Most Beautiful Woman in Films, the new Hedy Lamarr became one of the most successful actresses of the late '30s and early '40s. In a career that lasted into the late '50s, Lamarr acted in more than 25 films with the likes of Clark Gable, James Stewart, Spencer Tracy and Judy Garland.

This incredibly beautiful woman was also incredibly intelligent. She was a genius, and her contribution to science and technology was huge, though little known outside the scientific community.

Hedy Lamarr helped to set the groundwork for some of the most revolutionary technology of our time. In fact, the actress proved to be a genius inventor when, alongside George Antheil, she invented a spread spectrum technique, enabling the coding of secret communications for which she earned a late recognition, in the 1990s. Then refused by the Navy, this discovery is now widely used for Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi technologies.

From site http://www.hedylamarr.org/index.html
Following the outbreak of World War II, Lamarr, a passionate opponent of the Nazis, wanted to contribute more to the allied effort. As Mrs. Fritz Mandl, she had closely observed the planning and discussions that went into attempting to design remote-controlled torpedoes. These never went into production, because the radio-controlled guidance system was too susceptible to disruption. She got the idea of distributing the torpedo guidance signal over several frequencies, thus protecting it from enemy jamming. The only weak point was how to employ the synchronization of the signal's transmitter and receiver.

In 1940, Lamarr met the American avant-garde composer George Antheil of "ballet mécanique" fame. She described her idea to him, and asked him to help her construct a device that would enable this signal to be synchronized. Antheil laid out a system based on 88 frequencies, corresponding to the number of keys on a piano, using perforated paper rolls which would turn in sync with one another, transmitting and receiving ever-changing frequencies, preventing interceptance and jamming.
In December of 1940, the frequency hopping device developed by Lamarr and Antheil was submitted to the national inventors council, a semi-military inventors' association. Lamarr and Antheil went on to file for a patent application for the "Secret Communication System," June 10, 1941. The patent was granted by the United States patent office on august 11, 1942.
