No, seriously, we need your $5

iGive is running a special promotion for April: if they get 30,000 new members, charities will get $5 for each new member they recruited. So if you've been meaning to sign up, now is the time! This will cost you nothing.

You might be thinking, "eh, whatever, it's only $5, someone else will do it, they don't need me" -- this is not true. Our current bank balance is $40. So far, only one person has signed up this month as a C4L affiliate. We seriously need every $5 we can get. You will make a difference. Yes, you, right there, the one in front of the computer. Also you, the one looking at your phone.

Fine print: you have to join in April and install the iGive button browser add-on sometime before July 15. You don't have to ever actually use the site or the button. You do need to stay signed up with the button installed in some browser until July 16. After that, feel free to unsub/uninstall to your heart's content. Although if you do stay with iGive, Captions for Literacy will greatly appreciate the support! This is currently our main source of funding. People living in the US and Canada can both sign up (and maybe elsewhere as well; but they only have American and Canadian retailers).

If you haven't heard of iGive before: it's a site that tracks your purchases at many online retailers (around 1500 at this point) and gives a percentage of your purchase to your affiliated charity. The funds come from the store, not from you. Presumably what the stores get from this is increased traffic and sales. For instance, I'm now a little more likely to shop at Athleta than Title Nine, because the former is an iGive store. As an added bonus, some stores offer coupon codes to iGive shoppers.

If we're already I give members we can just give CfL funds directly through them, I imagine?

Yes, Amy Poehler would have been a great choice.

Anyone here versed in reading Android system logs and willing to give me a quick hand? At least, I hope it's quick?

The problem: My phone keeps dropping calls. Yesterday it did it twice while I was talking to my mother. I saved the verbose logcat output so I could see if anything in particular is happening just before the call drops. But I'm having trouble figuring out which lines in particular mark the moment a call was dropped. I'm sure I could figure it out with some research, but hey, this is what LazyWeb is for, right? ;-)

This is one of my favourite indulgences -- avocados shipped straight from the farm in California. Last year I got one of their monthly subscriptions. One of the other benefits is that they have more than one variety available (unlike your typical grocery store, which only stocks Hass).

Just discovered a new must-have app for me -- AutomateIt. One of the nifty things it can do: set your phone to not-silent when it receives an SMS with specific text. So if you can't find your phone, and it's on silent, you can have a friend text it the special phrase and it will turn on the sound.

This does sound like someone is trying to reinvent Tasker.

These were pretty good. I liked mine better with some hot sauce.

Army of Women (a clearinghouse for recruiting subjects for breast cancer research) is looking for women diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40 or younger to give a blood sample for a genetic study. You don't have to still be under 40, but you do have to live in the US or Canada. Your regular doctor can take the sample.

Fun with the English language: I'm amused by how "this is not an option" and "this is not optional" actually mean opposite things.

I worked at a bakery with the slogan, "Where quality is not an option!" which we had to say cheerfully when we answered the phone.

Nothing I could say would convince the owner that she was sending the opposite message to what she intended.

It's the end of an era! My room is now minus one headboard & footboard. Also one catload of dust and fur from under the bed.
