Fellow Chicago Astronomers...

2018 is shaping up to be a busy year for urban astronomy for the Chicago Astronomer...

We have been approved by the Chicago Park District for our 8th year as the Resident Astronomer of the Parks.  We are finalizing our citywide schedule and should be available soon.

But, our first Park session of the year will be Maggie Daley Park this Saturday, the 24th of February 2018, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

We will set up telescopes just to the west of the Cancer Survivor Garden south of Randolph, see attached.

(Chicago Astronomer crew members, contact me prior if interested in participating.)

Second, we enter our 3rd year as Resident Astronomer for the 606 Trail and start our urban astronomy sessions for 2018 on Friday, March 9th 2018 at 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm - maintaining our 2nd Friday of each month/3rd Friday Rain date schedule.

We will set-up Telescopes at our temporary site at Julia de Burgos Park (1805 S. Albany) till about June...and then return to our regular site at the Western Trailhead at Ridgeway Ave....sharing the urban slies all all trail visitors.

Third, you asked for it, and here it comes....

The Chicago Parks District and the Chicago Astronomer have initiated a new program on beginning astronomy classes at Northerly Island, starting on Friday 02 March 2018.  "First Friday Astronomy Club" Class starts at 6:30 to concludes at 8:30 pm.

Cost: $10.00

Class subjects will be:  Navigating the skies & identifying celestial objects and learning to use telescopes. We will venture out into the Island for field activities, applying classroom instruction to conclude our session.

There will be three classes throughout the year in this pilot program and the CPD will open registration on the 27th of February and the CPD recommends placing it in your wish list at the website on that date.

Add to that: I am teaching Astronomy at the British School, conducting Astronomy club at IHSCA High School ...and After School Matters and I will decide if the Chicago Astronomer will be part of the 2018 program.  We have new gear to set-up and new members to include.

Busy year indeed - winter break is coming to an end and we start doing what we love to do.....see all soon.

This will be a busy Saturday for urban astronomy and the Chicago Astronomer crew.

First, we will be part of the opening day events at the brand new "606 Bloomingdale Trail"  conducting solar viewings starting at 12 noon and sharing the Sun till 3:00 pm.

Then after a five hour break, we will head toward Oz park on Chicago's north side and continue with evening observation of planets and springtime targets.

Full details on both here:
