"Dawn Over Lake Ballard"

The dawn breaks over Lake Ballard, silhouetting the dry salt lake's iconic pyramid shaped hill that lies just off the shore. Situated half an hour from Menzies, Western Australia - this lake is a must see if you happen to be travelling to the goldfields.

This is a 5 panel mosaic, stitched using PTGui and processed in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"Wreathed in Smoke and Flame"

How great it is to clean off the dust from my telescope and take it out under the dark skies over the weekend (well dark-ish anyway - the moon was at 56%).

I decided to target the easily recognisable Horsehead and Flame nebula, although I prefer to personally name it the "Balrog Nebula" after J.R.R.Tolkien's mythical demon, as his description seems to match this composition closely:

"The flames roared up to greet it, and wreathed about it; and a black smoke swirled in the air. Its streaming mane kindled, and blazed behind it. In its right hand was a blade like a stabbing tongue of fire; in its left it held a whip of many thongs" [Lord of the Rings, Book 1].

Taken with a modified Canon 6D DSLR through a Skywatcher 120ED refractor - details are below.

Enjoy, Will.

"Into A Star Filled Land"

My very good and inspirational friend, Peter, kindly posed for this vertical panorama of the Milky Way galaxy looking south. Taken from the popular Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, Western Australia - I tried to capture the beauty of this part of the galaxy by using a longer focal length 85mm lens rather than the typical wide angle. From the horizon and tracing "up" the Milkyway are the stars Alpha and Beta Centauri, the dark Coal Sack nebula, the Southern Cross, the Running Chicken nebula, and the great Carina nebula. Plus and assortment of other stars thrown in...

As it was a hot and humid night, there was a fair bit of noise in the images - pretty much limiting how much you can push the curves in photoshop before it becomes obvious.

This was a 16 panel mosaic through a 85mm lens. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration and stretching in PixInsight, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"The Skies of Crux and Carina"

Too many stars in this image, but you can still make out the wonderful Southern Cross, and of course the mighty Carina Nebula to the right needs no introduction. IC2944 (aka The Running Chicken nebula) features roughly in the middle of the image, and the open cluster IC2602 (aka Southern Pleiades) shines towards the bottom right.

This image was taken from the relatively dark skies around Chittering, Western Australia. It is a single panel taken through a 85mm lens with multiple exposures at 3 x 30s, 3 x 60s, 3 x 120s, and 3 x 300s. Stacked and processed in Photoshop, with different exposures combined in Photomatix.

Enjoy, Will.

"Orion Returned"

Everyone's favourite this time of year, despite trying to resist the temptation I have to return to Orion.

With grand ideas of a large multi-panel, HDR with Ha and RGB filters, my ambition was reduced somewhat by the reality of some bad frames, the annoying realisation that air traffic control was routing all planes from "up north" right over where I was imaging, and the RGB exposures differing extensively between panels. In the end this is cropped by 50%, and consists of only my 5 minutes RGB filter and 10 minute Ha filter exposures in one panel. Details are below.

Hopefully, with some further post-processing I'll be able to re-introduce all the other data captured for Orion on this night...still, its pretty to look at.

Enjoy, Will.

"The Astrophotographer Ponders..."

...that there is no way I am lugging my equipment up that hill, no matter how good the view is!!!

Standing on Lake Ballard, Western Australia on 25/12/2017. Looking south with the moon at 40% high and descending to the west, it lights up the hill and salt lake great but does somewhat wash out the night sky. The mighty Carina Nebula looks down from the heavens above the hill.

This was a 6 panel mosaic through a 50mm lens. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration, levels, saturation and contrast in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"Morning at Guilderton Lighthouse"

North of Perth, Western Australia stands watch the Guilderton Lighthouse. This lighthouse is a magnet for astrophotographers as it is easily accessible, clear lands around it for almost full 360deg views, and is in relatively dark skies.

But this lighthouse is also great to view in daylight. Here, during my initial scouting session in the morning, I took advantage of the moment to take this panorama as the sun rises.

This is a 5 panel mosaic, stitched using PTGui and processed in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day were generous enough to choose my photo of the Carina nebula over Lake Ballard for today 05/01/2018. Thanks!
A good start to the year...hopefully this year will have clearer skies...especially for the upcoming super moon eclipse on the 31st.

"Astro Twilight"

Morning on Lake Ballard, in what is called astronomical twilight (the time before nautical and civilian twilight prior to dawn). To the eye it the horizon is still dark, but to the camera under long exposure the sky is starting to brightening with the approaching sunrise. Looking to the south, the dark Coal Sack nebula and the stars Hadar and Rigil Kentaurus (aka Alpha and Beta Centauri) rise from above the clouds, with the Southern Cross and Carina Nebula at the top of the image.

This was more of an opportunity shot rather than planned. Whilst I should've used a wider angle lens (due to the moving clouds), i thought maybe I could get away with a mosaic with a 50mm as the clouds were far away and slower moving. In the end, however, I had to abandon a whole column on the left as the clouds moved sufficiently enough that the stitching program "tore" the image. What remains is a 2 x 4 panel image.

This was a 3 x 4 panel mosaic through a 50mm lens, but I had to cull the left column of 4 images due to poor stitching. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration, levels, saturation and contrast in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.
