I found some pretty big icicles hanging off my house roof this week. These are a sign of typically either warmer outside temperatures (not quite yet!) or loss of heat from inside the house that causes snow to melt and then refreeze as the water comes off the roof. Now is the time to bundle up and look around your roof lines. Problems like this can lead to broken gutters, or water damage to inside ceilings/walls, not to mention the hazards of falling icicles. Roof rakes can be used to pull snow away from gutters before it starts to melt (be sure to use caution and watch for overhead power lines), or contact a roofing contractor if you think you might have a problem brewing.

Tis the season! The holiday season yes, but also the season for ice dams. Our recent snows combined with the current warmer temperatures mean gradually melting roof snow. Roof raking the edges of your roof can help minimize the risk of these forming, but usually there are longer-term solutions that might be needed.
