Great write up on Don Mellor and ice climbing. Great advice. I can't think of many leads that weren't on plastic ice, where at some point I didn't ask myself why do I do this to myself (oh, but those plastic leads trick me into believing it can always be carefree). Indeed it is a thug sport, but one based on a smoke and mirrors illusion that the climber is in control.

Mellor, 62, began ice climbing in the make-your-own tools era and has since introduced the sport to generations of students at a Lake Placid prep school where he is a teacher and counselor. An Adirondack Ice Climber's Guide, and occasionally helps rangers rescue fallen climbers. Mellor is among the small cadre of veteran climbers who know winter routes up Adirondack rock faces like the back of their gloves. [...] it's a different kind of climb...

Normally I refrain from saying things like she died of stupidity, because accidents do actually happen and people should be able to push themselves, even when conditions seem extreme to others. This unfortunately wasn't an accident or a single moment of misjudgement. When you set off into these conditions you have to realize you are on your own. Even SAR services can't be counted on to endure these conditions, and helicopters aren't magic. So you have to be fully self sufficient and make smart choices as to where you will go, or how you will deal with the worst case. Leeward slopes (assuming blowing snow and avalanche isn't an issue) or below treeline make safe alternatives. She went right into the worst of if, and then called for help on her PLB like it meant immediate rescue and a bit cocoa. Stupid and irresponsible.
A hiker who went missing Sunday on Mt. Adams has been found dead.

Makes perfect sense. It does seem exercise has become very militant in nature. And while a lot of people aspire to be as fit as an elite warrior, most of those guys, in spite of superior genetics (in many cases, but not always) and superior mental toughness (always) are done by their early 30s.
Exhaustion has become a status symbol in our culture. And that’s a problem. Here's a better approach to feeling healthy and happy for the long haul.

Scottish mixed is just insanity. Ines Papert is a beast woman. Kudos to her in a world were female climbers are often more concerned with modeling than ascents. Gotta get her book "Vertical: Life on the steepest faces" at some point.
