Hawaii regulators unveiled an update Wednesday for the Honolulu neighborhood of Kakaako’s transit-oriented development plan calling for diverse residential building types, ground-oriented family housing near transit stations, additional reserved housing, grocery stores, cultural and community amenities, food trucks and spaces for artists. #kakaako

Hawaii News Now counted more than two dozen tents at Kewalo Basin on Wednesday. Down the road at, Kakaako Beach Park, 23 tents were scattered across the lawn. Homeless in the area said many of them had been displaced by sweeps at Kakaako makai.

"The locally owned home and office supply store will be moving to 690 Pohukaina Street in Kakaako. The new air-conditioned location will be a 17,000 sq. ft. space and will have more than 50 parking stalls for customers. It is scheduled to open on Monday, October 19."

Social service providers say the Kakaako encampment is believed to be the other major homeless site, in addition to the one on Kapalama Canal in Kalihi, where the majority of the homeless population are migrants from the three island states that fall under the Compact of Free Association (COFA) treaty with the U.S. #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii   #homelessness

Instead of being used by the state as a deterrent for the homeless at Kakaako Gateway Park, Eat The Street has instead found a new ally in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which is giving them prime placement at the bottom of Ward Avenue. ‪#‎eatthestreet‬ ‪#‎kakaako‬ ‪#‎hawaii‬

KHON2 reached out to Street Grindz, the company that runs Eat the Street. They released the following statement: “We have no intention of displacing the homeless community or removing them permanently. Street Grindz is merely renting the park space from HCDA for one day each month.” #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii

"Queen Street is reportedly owned by Kakaako Land Company and street signs warn drivers there is no parking. But there are also signs on some of streets that tell motorists they can park there for a price. One person said he pays $120 a month to park on this particular street." #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii

The redevelopment of Honolulu's growing neighborhood of Kakaako is something Hawaii Gov. David Ige wants to continue to see, although he noted that the focus should be more on building homes for local residents rather than outside investors.
