The Four Sublime States and the Practice of Loving Kindness
By Nyanaponika Thera and Nyanamoli Thera
Two essays on the four sublime states or brahmavihara: love, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. Ven. Nyanaponika gives a brief description of all four with a section of contemplation exercises for each and concludes with a section on the inter-relationship of all four. Ven. Nanamoli's essay focuses on the basic brahmavihara of metta, translating passages from the Pali Canon in which the Buddha taught the practice of metta.
