Xerox Alto software released for free (non-commercial use only). The computer with the first high resolution bitmap display, first GUI as we understand it today (desktops, icons, menus), first mouse, first ‘personal’ computer (one user, one machine), first Ethernet and first multi-lingual character set (that would later become the basis for both ISO-10646 and Unicode).

And all that in 1973.

Apple fanbois: no, Steve Jobs didn't invent all that. Sorry.
"With the permission of the Palo Alto Research Center, the Computer History Museum is pleased to make available, for non-commercial use only, snapshots of Alto source code, executables, documentation, font files, and other files from 1975 to 1987. The files are organized by the original server on which they resided at PARC (Filene, Ibis, Indigo, Io, Ivy, and Pixel), plus two additional groupings (cd6 and cd8) that correspond to files that were restored from other archive tapes. For each server, there are one or more top-level directories containing subdirectories and files. Each file is generally presented two ways: in a viewable format (e.g., HTML, PDF), and in its original format (referred to as “raw” in the directory listings)."

Please Pass The Fork -- First screenshot of my Links browser custom setup for G+. From <http://debianfork.org/>, the text version begins, in Q&A FAQ format: Shall we fork Debian™? :^|

Who are you?! We are Veteran Unix Admins and we are concerned about what is happening to Debian GNU/Linux to the point of considering a fork of the project.

And why would you do that? Some of us are upstream developers, some professional sysadmins: we are all concerned peers interacting with Debian and derivatives on a daily basis.

We don't want to be forced to use systemd in substitution to the traditional UNIX sysvinit init, because systemd betrays the UNIX philosophy.

We contemplate adopting more recent alternatives to sysvinit, but not those undermining the basic design principles of "do one thing and do it well" with a complex collection of dozens of tightly coupled binaries and opaque logs.

Downloading a copy as I type this. I wish I could have made the Kickstarter!
Have you downloaded my computer history nostalgia book yet! I'm giving it away, so what are you waiting for? http://www.classiccomputing.com/CC/HB_Book.html

I'd still be using one of these, except the moment I first used a Sun Type 5 it was love at first sight (and type). I also need more keys than the Type M has. :-/

Molotov Line, 64 Zambrów Fortified Region, Podbiele strongpoint, Poland

I took this photo of a single machine gun pillbox in November but the weather was so beautiful that it still seemed like summer. There are a dozen of pillboxes in the area of Podbiele and most of them are conveniently spread on the seemingly endless stretch of farmland. The sun was beautiful, the colors clear and somehow it struck me that the view was more reminiscent of a pure summer kitsch than that of a usual gloom of fdark and forgotten places.
And that is how I remembered that day and that lone pillbox adorned by a gnarled tree.
So here it is – a kitsch made of reinforced concrete.
