Rob Bell speaks to me. He is correct. A lot of this is why I left the church. Why can't we question what we've been told all these years. We just have to accept that something is correct because we've always been told this? Why can't we question and debate things? He is about love.
You started saying that God is the only authority and Jesus is the Word of God. Then you went from speaking about about Galileo, to evolution, to women covering their head, to women keeping from assuming authority over men, and ended with gluttony. It sounds like you are trying to disregard some parts of the Bible while validating others in order to make it fit to your life style.
There is no way to substantiate the claims that the Bible teaches that the sun moves around the earth. There are some verses that talk about the sun going up or going down. This should be hardly surprising, however, since events in the Bible often are written in accommodating language used to express phenomena as man sees them.
No. Actually God created the heavens and the earth in six days and on the seventh day he rested. Evolution played no part in this. Biological fundamentals show that evolution is false. Biogenesis is the biological law that says that life comes from life; yet evolution hinges on abiogenesis.
Maybe women should cover their head, maybe they shouldn't. How a woman dresses herself has a lot to do with how she shows modesty and maybe back then covering your hair was part of showing modesty.
1 Timothy 2:12 In this chapter Paul uses the pronoun "I" to give these instructions, meaning these instructions are coming from himself. Even so we should not disregard everything he says.
The reason Paul wrote that it is better to remain single is because a single person has less responsibilities and is able to devote more time to God (keep in mind he is not talking about an unmarried person living in adultery). While a married person has to worry about the affairs of the world and how he/she can please their spouse and therefore has less time to devote to God.
Notice that when Paul gives instructions about how women should not teach, he speaks as it is coming from himself. When he gives instructions on being unmarried (1 Corinthians 7:25) he makes it clear that what he is saying are not commands from the Lord.
When Paul refers to homosexuality in Romans, 1 Corinthians, and 1 Timothy it is clear that what he is saying has nothing to do with personal opinion, culture, or misinterpretations. What he is saying is consistent with the rest of the Bible and makes perfect sense in the context that is being said.
