I am developing a gift-giving service http://darudar.org.

DaruDar is an international gift-giving service where people give away things and their services to each other for absolutely free requiring nothing in return.

The basic aim of DaruDar is to make Gift Giving possible among unknown people. How it works in brief. One (gift-giver) publishes what s/he would like to give and others (wishers) wish this gift describing why they need them. Gift-giver explores all wishers's wishes, their profiles and reputations to decide whome to transfer the gift.

According to the traditions of our community gift-giver should to transfer his gift to those whose needs seem the most relevant to him personally and to his gift. And after you receive the gift you publish the public gratitude to ensure everybody that you really receive the useful thing.

I am curating the gift-giving community DaruDar where people every day give away things and services to each other for absolutely free. And I can confirm that women play a crucial role in a gift-giving process. According to the service statistics they comprise about 70% of all registered users. But in fact they produce more then 90% of all activities. By the way when our project just started we had only 50% active women (men were trying to participate in new social practice of gift-giving too).

So now we can argue that gift-giving itself is more enjoyable for women. And the stories about Secret Santa describing in the question confirms this fact one more time.

And yes, on DaruDar we celebrate New Year organizing Secret Santa too (=

Gift Economy is a substitute for the economy of equivalent exchange (ex. money).

Current Internet tecnologies give us a great opportunity to build the world without money at all or reduce their influence as much as possible. Money were just temporary good "agregator of information". But in our information age we are able to agregate information differently. Online Reputation Systems based on obtaining recognition from others can create a real possibility for us to interact due to Gifts without money.

In our project DaruDar, the service of gift-giving, we practically try to understand how all can work without money.

I think we implemented very close interaction practice at DaruDar. Here people publish what they would like to give, their things or services. Others wish these gifts describing in comments why they need them. Gift-givers explore all needs of wishers and transfer their gifts to those whose needs are most closest to them. And at the end the gratitude for gift is published.

Every member of the community can play these both roles: to be a gift-giver of one thing and a wisher of another one simultaneously.

The Gift Economy now.

"The good news about this system is that there are no leaders required, just tools and models that people can use to organise things themselves, from the bottom up. Like the current political and economic models, I'll break this down into departments: The Department of Resources, The Department of Transport, The Department of Skills, Labour and Knowledge, The Department of Housing and Accommodation, The Department of Education, The Department of Food, The Department of technology, The Ministry of Defence (aka The Ministry of Attack), The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, The Department of Health".

Every department has its implementation already in our world, author shows the real examples. It's rather interesting.

DaruDar.org — это интернет-сервис безвозмездного дарения, с помощью которого люди, незнакомые друг с другом, безвозмездно дарят друг другу свои вещи и услуги. Вокруг сервиса формируется сообщество дарителей, миссия которого — совместными усилиями научиться дарить и благодарить, чтобы передать это умение остальному миру. Инновационность тут не в новых технологиях или новых идеях, а в том, каким образом и для каких целей всем известные современные технологии используются. То что раньше было доступно только в кругу очень близких и знакомых друг с другом людей, благодаря Дару-дару становится доступным среди тех, кто совершенно не знает друг друга в повседневной жизни. Это — социальная инновация.
