Before receiving a tour of the historical prison facility you are whisked away on a ferry. The sail was smooth and filled with great shots of the bridge, sky and water. There are 2 stops with a tour guide before going into the facility. Once inside it becomes an interactive audio scavenger hunt. This was my favorite part discovering new facts and getting the opportunity to capture great pictures. I would recommend Alcatraz to anyone who enjoys historical sights and exploring.

Stayed here back in the 1940's. Was a very nice place, not to many murders went on in that community. Only around 3 or 4 A day, which for a population of a few thousand is pretty good! The food was not too good but when it was hot out, you always had and ice cold ocean filled with exotic life to swim in.

Book your tickets for this tour as EARLY as you can!!! You've been warned. This tour is THAT good, don't risk not seeing it when you're in town. We loved that the tour wasn't extremely long, it was well produced, the staff were friendly and helpful. The boat ride is short-enough that if you experience motion sickness, you may not have any troubles. The views from Alcatraz are flat-out AMAZING! Wear decent walking shoes!!! You will be on your feet for the duration of the visit. Don't miss this!

They say that one thing that San Franciscans never do is go to Alcatraz. That's dumb. This place is beautiful and full of history. I did not do the audio tour, but kind of wish I had. It would have been nice to hear about some of the things that weren't already written on plaques and such. On the other hand, it was nice walking around the island on my own and not being trapped inside one of those masses of people following the same audio tour.

There is so much history and cool stories of some of America's worst criminals. It's a beautiful island in the bay, but you are walking through and around National Park protected ruins. The cell block is at the top of the island and its a fairly steep though short hike. They do have a tram for the mobility impaired. Make sure you walk around the back of the island and through the Rec yard. The audio tour doesn't dwell there but it's open to the public. It's very iconic from Escape from Alcatraz to Tony Hawk skater Nintendo games. You have to buy ferry tickets to the island in advance.

The experience was quite breathtaking. The skill of the story telling here was remarkable, captured the entire tour group. You'll need to book a couple of months in advance so you don't miss out! Make sure you don't miss the boat, they leave on the dot. The preservation of the island is impressive, with the wildlife still happily dwelling on the island. Do not miss this!

Great history and very interesting. Although very sad to see how people in jail lived. Really liked the info from the walking audio tour. Park ranger also gave a great talk. Very educational

You've seen movies about it, you've learned in class about it. You won't appreciate it until you actually see it for the first time across from the Piers or bridges. Alcatraz is a small island full of mystery, suspense and history. First, book your tickets in advance. As time gets closer, it is more and more difficult to get tickets. We booked the afternoon tour, but I wish we had booked the evening tour instead (that'll be next time). After a quick, scenic ferry ride over to the island, you'll be welcomed by a NPS officer that will give you a brief overview on what to expect and where to go. The walk to the main building is equivalent to about 13 stories, so be prepared to walk! They do also have a trolly that does back and forth if you can't walk it, but I suggest to take the stroll as there is a lot to see and do along the way. Once you reach top, you'll get your headphones for the self-guided audio tour. I have to admit, I was pretty skeptical about it but it was actually pretty great! The only catch is that you have to pay a lot of attention, because it's easy to get lost if you're distracted by someone or stay watching a particular area longer. To me, it was amazing to walk along the halls and facilities that have so much history. Trying to visualize it in your head as you go is part of the fun and makes you appreciate it more. If you visit San Francisco, make sure to put this on your list.
