A must-see when in San Francisco. From the ferry to the ranger at the island to the audio tour, absolutely solid experience. It's a bit of a walk to the top but well worth it. The audio tour is well presented and very interesting. Even my 6 year old enjoyed it. Stories from guards and inmates from the 50s and 60s, talking about experiences while hearing the clanking of prison doors and key rings. Just awesome.

This is a MUST DO thing on the things you should do in San Francisco. If you're lucky on a clear day when the sun goes down , you've the most wonderful sunset (behind the golden gate bridge) you can imagine. The audio tour is also really worth it.

It definitely was an experience to be had. My daughter loves history (lets pray she is a History major) After leaving the Island and back to the Hotel she wouldn't stop talking about her experience. She even had a dream about it that night. She loves learning the History of African Americans and of the Holocaust also. We had a wonderful time even though on the Island it was freezing cold, in the Summer.

I love the boat to Alcatraz island and to the golden state bridge was an awesome experience and only 1hour ride costed $15. It's a really cold ride and I didn't bring a jacket >_< I recommend trying a tour around this place it's really fun ride

Went for the Ai WeiWei installation in Feb 2015. The history and buildings of Alcatraz are interesting. Plenty of info around the island, but may want to do your own supplemental research into the history surrounding the occupation of the island by a group of Indians. Definitely worth the ferry ride out to Alcatraz in youre in the San Fran area, if just to explore the abandoned buildings.

Alcatraz Island is a fascinating place historically. Recently it has gotten even better. Even for a local such as myself, it was really interesting to visit again to view the Al Wei Wei art exhibit that is currently on through May of 2015. There are newly opened buildings where the exhibition is being housed, such as the industries building and the prison hospital. The art exhibit was thought provoking and moving. A must see/experience. I can recommend a visit or re-visit to Alcatraz.

Had a great time checking out Alcatraz Penitentiary. I have always been interested of the living conditions many hard core felons had to endure at the Rock. The audio tour is a great way to put everything in prospective. While you walk around the prison, you are handed headphones and can listen to testimonies from people who worked or spent time on the island. I would totally recommend visiting the island. Also, the views of San Francisco from the Island are amazing. They have night tours, for anyone brave enough.
