Introduction

Fred Cowgill says he was a misplaced Louisvillian at birth. It took him 28 years to find his way home. Fred was born in Johnson City, N.Y. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and Boston University, moved to Louisville in 1986, and has been here ever since.

Fred has been the Sports Director at WLKY for 27 years, by far the longest tenure of anyone in that job in the station's history.

Fred has won 15 "Best of Louisville" Awards from Louisville Magazine, 5 "Best of Kentucky" Awards from Kentucky Monthly and 2 "Kentucky Best Sportscaster" Awards from the Associated Press.

Fred has covered almost every major sporting event in the country in his 33 year TV sports career, including 27 Kentucky Derbies, 14 Final Fours and 5 national college basketball champions (1 UofL, 3 UK, 1 IU). His favorite story is the historic 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup win at Valhalla.

Fred has hosted charity golf tournaments in Louisville for 2 decades, which have raised more than $1 million to fight diabetes. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association Hall of Fame.

He now hosts "The Cowgill-Valvano Wild Eggs Scramble Fore Cancer," which benefits The American Cancer Society and The V Foundation.

Fred got his start in broadcasting in 1975 at WRCC Radio in Suffern, N.Y. His sports television career began in 1980 with the debut of CNN. He also worked for the ABC affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., before coming to Louisville.
