The Purpose of this Conference
Adoption of social media by law enforcement is in a stage of exponential growth. Some law enforcement agencies have already experienced tremendous successes; while others are ready but don’t know how to get started. The Social Media the Internet and Law Enforcement (SMILE) conference will arm you with the technical hands-on skills and the practical knowledge to navigate the social media world with confidence.

The SMILE Conference is the leading conference devoted to Social Media, the Internet and Law Enforcement initiatives. The SMILE Conference has pioneered the adoption of social media by law enforcement agencies across the world for public outreach, crime prevention, and forensics. In conjunction with the ConnectedCOPS™ blog, The SMILE Conference has become both the go-to and most trusted source by law enforcement agencies worldwide.

SMILE Conference USA and UK
Chief Jane Castor and the men and women of the Tampa Police Department will host law enforcement professionals from around the world at #SMILEcon #9 May 28th-30th, 2014.

In September, we are hosted by the West Midlands Police in Birmingham, UK from the 9th-11th for SMILEcon #10!

Conference Format
The first day of the conference, attendees hear from law enforcement and communication professionals on topics of social media strategy, reputation management, policy and other issues pertaining to community outreach. This (the eighth) SMILE Conference will also emphasize Event Management to include Crisis Negotiation.

Who’s SMILE’n
We have a confirmed keynote from Peter Muyshondt from Antwerp, Belgium Police and a presentation on investigations from Officer Marko Forss of the Helsinki, Finland Police. We are working on an international mix of speakers who are the leading thinkers in this area. Our subject matter experts will lead delegates through three public-safety-specific and information-packed intense days of social media and Internet education.

Who Should Attend
From the Chief to the newest officer in the agency, Investigators, PIOs, SROs and Community Policing Officers, The SMILE Conference is appropriate for anyone who is interested in social media and its many applications in the field of law enforcement, community engagement and crime prevention.

The SMILE Conference will address social media as community media, investigative techniques and cases studies, officer safety, social media policy and strategy, legal issues, recruitment and retention and will also offer a SMILE bootcamp of hands-on training every morning from 7:30-8:45. Plenary sessions run from 9-5, 9-3 on the third day.

Something Different From the Typical Conference Format
The conference will also include one evening Town Hall meeting.

Thursday evening in Tampa and Wednesday evening In Birmingham – This Town Hall has proven to be one of the most popular events of the conference. It will provide everyone an opportunity to further explore and discuss at length issues concerning social media and law enforcement that could not be fully addressed during the plenary session. The Town Hall will be highly spirited, interactive and wrapped in a social media context.

LAwS Communications Organizes Second Global Police Tweet-a-thon for November 1
Law Enforcement Agencies and Individual Officers Worldwide Come Together on Twitter
BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Oct 30, 2013) - On Nov. 1, starting at 8 a.m. local time and spanning for 24 hours, law enforcement agencies around the world will connect on Twitter for the second Global Police tweet-a-thon. Organized by LAwS Communications, the purpose of the tweet-a-thon is to call attention to policing as well as to police use of social media. All participants will tweet about their work using the same hashtag, #poltwt.
The first Global Police tweet-a-thon took place on March 22, 2013 and was a huge success. More than 200 law enforcement agencies all across the world participated, resulting in over 48,000 tweets in 23 different languages.
"The first police tweet-a-thon in March reached over 11 million people and trended across the western hemisphere," said Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizer of the Global Police Tweet-a-thon. "We expect this one to be just as impactful with more participants and expanded global reach.
"The primary goal is to call attention to police work and police use of social media, but each agency sets its own local goal. People have responded very positively to seeing police tweet. Another great thing that results is that police officers from around the world connect to each other. During the first #poltwt I recall comments about how they realized they're all dealing with the same issues and facing the same challenges."
There are currently more than 130 agencies and 50 individual officers signed up to participate from the U.S., Canada, UK, Spain, Belgium, Iceland and New Zealand. Any agency or individual can join the Tweet-a-thon and tweet any portion of the 24-hour period. For a map of participants, please visit https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zUG4zLc-9CWI.k7jbZfrOV6_Q. "Police forces from across the United Kingdom are recognized around the world for their innovative use of social media to engage with the residents they serve," said Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman of West Midlands Police. "West Midlands Police are delighted to be part of #poltwt. We want to show the world how many different officers in the force tweet on a regular basis, from our Community Support Officers on patrol right through to the command team at Assistant Chief Constable level.
"To mark #poltwt we are launching our latest twitter account @trafficwmp, which will feature the work of our traffic cops. With only one tweet to their name they already have in excess of 1000 followers, which just goes to show the interest in what the traffic officers do. As part of #poltwt day we will also be broadcasting live video from the traffic officers as they patrol the streets of the West Midlands."
To participate, email Lauri Stevens at lauri@lawscomm.net with your Twitter name, agency name and physical address.
