I got circled a bunch recently, so:

Hi, I'm Monica. I am, in no particular order: a freelance writer/editor, a game designer, cosplayer, peerless game master, martial arts enthusiast, Social Justice Bard, music nerd, and anime fan.

If you're into any of that, tell me who you are! The Social Justice thing is non-optional, though, so if you're against that, please uncircle me.

My current progress! I always feel like my WIPs look like hot messes, but I'm really proud of what I've accomplished.

Because +Google+ is a big fat fail today with what is going on - I decided to share what is happening on +Twitter  with the #yesallwomen  tag.

Here is a blog post about what exactly is going on with the hashtag:
http://ginadenny.blogspot.de/2014/05/yesallwomen.html

Here is a snippet:
#YesAllWomen
Trigger warning: Sexual violence and everything related to it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every time there is a heavily publicized act of violence against women just for being women, there is an inevitable backlash of "Hey, come on. Not all men..."
"Not all men are jerks."
"Not all men treat women that way."
"Not all men are violent psychopaths."
And the resounding answer is always: DUH.
We all know that NOT ALL MEN ARE ____________. We know. But the reason we need to talk about violence against is women is because even though not all men are violent psychopaths, all women have to learn the difference between a violent psychopath and a regular guy.
That's how the #YesAllWomen hashtag started. It tells the story of how every woman has been subjected to the actions of this small, minority group of men. Those who are jerks, those who do treat women that way, and those who are violent psychopaths.
Hashtag Slacktivism rarely accomplishes anything. In fact, it almost always accomplishes nothing. But in this particular case, it accomplished exactly the thing it set out to accomplish.
It shared our stories.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This whole hashtag is in response to the UCSB shooter, who wrote a 140 page manifesto about how he was rejected sexually and women deserved to be punished for not giving him what he was entitled to; sex.

Link to manifesto: http://www.scribd.com/doc/225960813/Elliot-Rodger-Santa-Barbara-mass-shooting-suspect-My-Twisted-World-manifesto

The image below is just a teeny percentage of You Tube comments commiserating with the murderer.

The #yesallwomen  hashtag on +Twitter :
https://twitter.com/hashtag/YesAllWomen?src=tren

Is something everyone needs to be looking at today.

I am posting this today because when I searched up the hashtag on Google+ I found about a dozen posts only.   No one seems to know, so, here it is.  Also, I continually suck it up and take the abuse I'll receive for posting this because I'm used to it for posting stuff like this and that is precisely WHY we need the hashtag #yesallwomen

Even if these comments are meant as sarcasm or satire or something (which I absolutely have to believe, because look at them!), even then they're still unbelievably bad taste, poor judgment and a sign that these are some really terrible people.

But if they're serious, if they really have more empathy for a mass murderer than for his victims, then they need to be put away, because they're not fit to function in a civilized society.

Check out this week's Moon Crystal Mondays!
#sailormooncrystal

It's time for another Moon Crystal Monday with your Threat Or Menace reviewers, Isaac Sher and +Monica Speca!  In today's episode, we're introduced to this reboot's version of Makoto Kino, Sailor Jupiter -- how does this episode go?  Did it change any from the original versions of the story?  And how's the art this week?  All these questions and more, answered through the link below!
Welcome back to episode 5 of Moon Crystal Mondays, where we cover the twice-monthly release of SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL!  Today's episode was especially fun for me, as Sailor Jupiter has always been my favorite character of the show, from what little I'd seen of it.  Much of that just has to do with aesthetics -- I love ...

The sukeban thing is interesting, too, when you consider the time period sailormoon was originally written. While young girls in the early 90's would have instantly recognized mako's curly, permed-looking (possibly lightened) hair (which is why Takeuchi had her remark "this is natural."), her longer skirt (for hiding knives under) as the visual cues that she's a female gang leader, this "style" has been out of date in real life for well over a decade. Nobody in Japan does this stuff any more. These formerly common markers are now obscure, and Japanese children watching now probably wouldn't recognize these markers at all.

It continues to be utterly fascinating to me which relics of the 90s make it through into Crystal, and which are reformed. Not that they really could have gotten away with completely changing Mako's design, though...

The skirts, in general, are a lot longer than we are used to seeing in anime these days. Which is interesting to consider. I've been watching anime all this time, and it's gone through a lot of changes over the last two decades...

I think to say she looks 'like a thug' is a little off the mark, though. Japan doesn't have "thugs" -- that is a western concept, and I think the unique Japanese cultural implications are important to recognize.

Ooh look I wrote a Sailor Moon thing!

I am very proud to welcome +Monica Speca to another project on Threat Or Menace, as we kick off a new collaborative weekly feature -- MOON CRYSTAL MONDAYS!   With the premiere of Sailor Moon Crystal last weekend, the highly anticipated remake of the classic Sailor Moon, Monica and I will look at this show week to week, from the perspectives of both a hardcore Sailor Moon fan and a casual/moderate fan.  Join us, won't you?
Hey, folks!  Co-Editor Isaac Sher here.  We're going to switch things up a little at Threat Or Menace for a little while.  We'd been bringing you reviews of various movies on monday mornings ("Movie Mondays"), but we're going to put that feature on hiatus for the time being. In its place, we're going to review each ...

Oh cool! I watched this Saturday night. Having never read the manga, the art style shift was a bit surprising to me. It's still jarring because I think the limbs are even more elongated in the transformation sequence than I remember from the old version.

But I suspect this will grow on me. I really loved the old anime so I'm excited to see how closely their going to hew to the anime or to the manga.
