Carnegie Hall, NYC. Monday, June 29, 2015
I'll quickly fill you in about Carnegie Hall. The story is better than the experience! A local (he lives in Monroe CT) composer wrote a piece that contains a movement that is all handbell random ringing, called Celestial Liturgy. It was written for the Yale University Center for Music and Liturgy. Because we are pretty local to NYC, our director got an email asking if any of us would like to participate. We had no real rehearsal, and I don't think many of us fully understood exactly what was supposed to happen until it happened. It was a new experience. I think we frustrated the conductor as much as he frustrated us. Amateur handbell ringers used to more coddling! My parents attended, and they said it was really good. The voices of the International and Childrens' choirs were beautiful! I don't know how often conductors will be able to assemble over 100 bell ringers to play it again. So... that's my Carnegie experience.
