Today, our iconic Student Building will be named in honor of former Indiana University first lady Frances Morgan Swain. The wife of IU's ninth president Joseph Swain, Frances was an early advocate for women on campus. She took it upon herself to raise the first $6,500 to pay for the construction of what became the Student Building. The naming ceremony will take place at 4PM.
Nearly two decades before women won the franchise, Frances Morgan Swain was lobbying Indiana University’s Trustees for a space devoted to women students on campus. Now, almost 100 years later, the space she helped build will bear her name.
