The Mothership, SOAK's Major Burnable Structure for 2016, is looking for scientists to design art installations to be located inside our three rocket boosters. Oops -- we mean science experiments!
The Mothership's rocket boosters are wooden pods, about 8 feet across at their widest point and sloping inward toward a 10-foot-high peaked roof. The boosters surround our taller central spaceship. We are looking for experiments or lab installations that can be based inside these three booster pods.
SUBMIT TO THE MOTHERSHIP by April 16 to be considered. See more at the link: http://www.volcor.net/TakeSurvey2.aspx?s=90_MothershipExperiments

MAJOR BURNABLE SCULPTURE DESIGN SUBMISSIONS

Begin Experiment:

Hypothesis: A controlled mass oxidation will inspire community participation, and cause a statistically significant increase in the enjoyment of SOAK*2016.

Methods: A request for community participation will be made to alert the community to the opportunity to design and build a large structure made primarily from the dried and harvested xylem tissue of angiosperm and/or gymnosperm plants. Persons interested in submitting design proposals will utilize digital communications to do so, providing detailed information via an online form. From the various proposals submitted, a design will be selected by SOAK*2016 that is estimated to produce a maximal increase in enjoyment. A build crew will be assembled, and a budget provided, leading to the materialization of the design proposal, and culminating in it's mass oxidation.

Next Steps: Please submit your proposals before the deadline of Feb 14th at:
http://www.volcor.net/TakeSurvey2.aspx?s=73_MBS_Survey

Love,

Your SOAK*2016: Science! Event Production Team

Eureka! SOAK*2016 has a theme!

Hypothesis: SOAK*2016 functions better with a proper theme.

PROCESS: A variety of researchers spent numerous hours in the laboratory generating ideas for the SOAK*2016 theme. Our dedicated teams of scientists from SOAK*2015 & Burnout 2015 narrowed the data to the top five candidates. Our core scientists from SOAK*2016 examined the data and have reached the only logical conclusion:

SOAK*2016: SCIENCE!

The researcher who first pursued this avenue of investigation described the theme as, “Scientific method, biology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience. Lab coats, mad scientists, wacky inventors, massive experiments, test tubes, tesla coils, plasma balls. Interesting knowledge, educational talks and activities, A-B testing.”
Given our results to date, we encourage all of you to enter your laboratories and start planning experiments for your art, theme camps, and costumes now —

SOAK*2016 tickets go on sale in March.

Greetings from Inaugural Precipitation NW Board of Directors

Greetings Portland Regional Burners,

As many of you are aware, SOAK LLC (the umbrella organization that has until now managed the Portland regional festival as well as our fall event, Burnout) has experienced ongoing attrition in leadership for the past few years. In order to ensure sustainable governance into the future, a new LLC called Precipitation NW was formed in 2015 with Dan Brazelton as the sole proprietor. Over the course of 2015, Dan worked to prepare this new organization to adopt legal and financial responsibility for SOAK and all its assets.

Following an open nomination process and input from an 18-member steering committee, Dan appointed five new members to a volunteer board of directors on December 30th - those members are: Julia Betts, Amelia Lamb, Thomas "Tomcat" Martin, Becca Priddy, and Adrian "Cucumber" Thomas-Eikmann. Dan is stepping down but will continue to serve in an advisory role.

We are honored for this opportunity to serve the community in this new exciting chapter. We believe strongly in our role to model the 10 Principles of Burning Man, most notably Communal Effort and Civic Responsibility, and will be drafting a strategic plan to reflect this. It is our intention to obtain tax-exempt nonprofit status before the end of 2016. We will be working closely with Dan, the SOAK leads, and the Portland Regional Contacts to ensure a smooth transition as we build a strong foundation in Precipitation NW.

The new board has many decisions to make in the coming months, and we will need your help along the way. Be on the lookout for updates about our steps forward, goals we have set to keep us on track, and opportunities for you to get involved. We will be making presentations at the upcoming Town Hall Meeting (date to be announced soon) and the SOAK Leads retreat, and in the meantime we welcome questions at board@precipitationnw.org. You can follow our news on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/precipitationnw or on our website, http://precipitationnw.org.

Thank you for your encouragement and support through this transition.

In service,
The Precipitation NW Board of Directors

Greetings!

Calling attendees of SOAK, Portland's Official Regional Burn - seeking SOAK Leads for 2016 event cycle:

Producing an event for more than a thousand attendees over a four-day weekend requires the near-tireless efforts of a close-knit team of enthusiastic volunteers. For SOAK*2016, we have opportunities for new people to join the team as Department Leads and Associate Leads.

Please visit the new event-specific website, www.soakpdx.org to read about these roles and submit an application by Dec 15.

(Note: The doors will open for general volunteer positions in Feb 2016 via the usual channels.)

Dear Friends and Community,

If you recall, several months ago, a steering committee comprised of current volunteers, community members, RCs, and consultants was formed to help develop a new entity which would take over assets and management of projects and events formerly produced by SOAK, LLC.

We made this decision because both the events and the community they serve have far outgrown the organizational structure that was created more than a decade. After quite a bit of research, planning, and discussion, a new LLC - Precipitation NW - has been formed as a transitionary step toward applying for non-profit status. There was a consensus among the steering committee that this would be the best way to manage the events with participation from the community. Learn more about the new organization and what the steering committee has accomplished so far Precipitation NW here: http://www.precipitationnw.com/

What's next?

A mission statement has been developed, and the steering committee is now actively seeking participation from [you!] the community for board membership. We encourage you to consider who amongst your fellow community members would be ideal for board membership. The initial board will be comprised of 5-7 individuals with qualities that can be found here: http://www.precipitationnw.com/board

Nominations will remain open for a short period of time. The initial board will be selected by Dec 15th.  Nominations for board membership will be accepted in perpetuity as we will always need to identify talented and committed individuals.

Now is the time to take action to form the organization you have always dreamed of. Are you ready? Get set...go!

With love and respect,

Your Precipitation NW Steering Committee
