A couple of days ago, the United States Supreme Court delved into the arena of personal protection equipment. Josh Cable, at EHS Today, wrote an interesting article about the story… 

Apparently, U.S. Steel and the United Steelworkers union agreed during collective bargaining that workers shouldn’t be compensated for the time they spend changing their clothes. However, since that agreement was reached, the steelworkers have been arguing that PPE isn’t clothing and they should be compensated for the time they put on and take off safety equipment such flame-retardant suits, gloves, etc. 

On January 27, the Supreme Court unanimously concluded that while some types of PPE might meet the definition of clothes, safety equipment on the whole – think hard hats safety glasses, earplugs and respirators – does not meet the definition.
