There was a physics prof at Virginia Tech, circa 1984, who would give a lecture on why the dinosaurs died whenever he was permitted. I saw it at a local science fiction convention. His opinion was that the dinosaurs weren't able to pick their noses; when the comet struck the Earth, the mammals, whose forearms were long enough to allow nose-picking, survived, but for example Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, and Ankylosaurus either had legs that were too short to reach, or their nails were too large to remove the dust/soot/ash that was thrown into the atmosphere and clogged their nostrils (or nares, since dinosaurs are prehistoric birds).
