Node.js is much more than that, and I disagree on always not trusting it for back-end (sometimes it looks like the best choice, sometimes it is far from it).
But the point made is very interesting, and worth considering - at the cost of some redundancy: it will depend as well on the particular situation, and perhaps sometimes the benefits for front-end development will overrule the overhead of an extra layer, which, if carefully designed to avoid bottlenecks, might also help to redistribuite traffic load and obtain better caching.

I'm excited to see visualization of layers graduate from chrome tracing to a devtools experiment!  To enable this experimental feature you must be running Chrome 31 (currently dev or canary channel), enable chrome://flags/#enable-devtools-experiments, then enable "Show layers panel" under devtools experiments settings and close and re-open devtools.  If you want to learn about layers, see http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/speed/layers/.
