The Master allows things to happen. She shapes events as they come. She steps out of the way and lets the Tao speak for itself. ~The Daodejing Post written by Leo Babauta. This has been what I’ve been learning over the past couple of years. Allowing things to happen. It goes counter to our usual instincts in Western society — we are doers, creators of our destiny, we make things happen … we don’t wait for it to happen! That’s what I was taught fr...

This guest post comes to us via the awesome and lovely Liz of Being Geeky Chic fame. She writes about technology, comics, style, design, apps and a million other things on the regular. Pop over and say hi! I bought a new mattress and pillow this week. The reason? I’m investing in my resting. There was a time not too long ago where sleeping for 5 or 6 hours a night didn’t seem like that big of a deal. As long as I was getting SOME sleep, it seemed...

This guest post comes to us from Michelle! She helps creatives move from innovation and ideas into action and implementation. She lives in sunny Austin, TX, loves funky glasses, and writes about taking your business and life to new heights at Let's Radiate and Bombchelle. By most peoples' definition, "intelligence" has a very narrow meaning. I am intelligent in several ways, some of which are "typical" intelligences (very fast reader, good memory...

Your lover can’t read your mind. The waitress at your favorite cafe can’t read your mind. Your dearest, most closest friend whom you’ve known since kindergarten can’t, either. None of these people can possibly know how you’d like to be touched, how you wish to be kissed, how you desire to be heard — really & truly heard — unless they’ve got telepathic powers. And they likely don’t. So you must tell them. You must ask for what you want. If you wan...

A few days ago, I saw a celebrity activist campaign called “No Mother’s Day” which is encouraging mothers to boycott Mother’s Day this year in order to honor the 350,000 women lost each year in childbirth. While I admire the sentiment, I have a bit different approach. I thought it would be much more helpful to actually DO something to help stop these preventable deaths. In many areas of the world, a simple sterile birth kit costing just a few dol...

My love for food, rap, and all things rad have come together courtesy of Bankshot & LRG. Major props go out to Eli of Thrift Eye for tweeting this video my way. About the video: Conventional wisdom tells us not to talk with our mouth full, but no one ever said anything about pieces of food rapping along to some of the best culinary lines in hip-hop history. The latest short from production duo BankShot with music by DJ Nick Castle finds a stop-mo...

Mr. + I fell in love through postcards, so using vintage postcards for our wedding invitations was an obvious choice. Mr and I began our relationship long-distance. He was touring and I missed him so, occasionally a post card would find itself into my mailbox. Each one so perfectly jam-packed that it would've been simply impossible to fit another word onto it. These were the moments we were falling in love. Once engaged, we sought high and low to...

Nora Ephron is right up there with Nancy Meyers in my list of personal heroines. The woman was smart and witty, incredibly respected, and never took herself too seriously. Plus, Meryl Streep said “She was an expert in all the departments of living well,” which – well, who wouldn’t want Meryl Streep to say that about them?! In honor of her passing last evening, here’s some advice from the woman herself: On intelligence: “I think the feeling I like...

Reminder...
“People tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck, something that will descend like fine weather if you’re fortunate. But happiness is the result of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly.” ― Elizabeth Gilbert

OOPS! I never linked to the guest post I wrote for another site with my roundup of independent Los Angeles boutique recommendations! Of course, there are like a bazillion more (yet another reason L.A. is great), but I stuck to ones that focus on independent labels and have their own identifiable aesthetic, ranging from clothing to awesome modern design and crushworthy stationery. Included both west- and eastside options, even though I could have ...
