Wolf–Rayet Star WR 31a

In this image combining optical and infrared data by the Hubble Space Telescope you can see the Wolf–Rayet star WR 31a. It is located in the constellation of Carina (The Keel, https://goo.gl/ojyHNx), about 30,000 light-years away from Earth.

The blue nebula surrounding WR 31a is a Wolf–Rayet nebula (https://goo.gl/TVYHkl). It is a cloud of dust and gases driven by stellar winds and is expanding at a rate of around 220,000 kilometers per hour.

After a few hundred thousand years it will end its life in a supernova (https://goo.gl/VhJNhj).

What is a Wolf–Rayet star?

Wolf-Rayet stars are massive stars that have extremely high surface temperatures, 10 to 40 times that of our Sun. They are also very luminous, some of them several million times more luminous than our Sun, although much of their radiation output is in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum and not the visible part. They blast strong winds of particles out into space while burning up their fuel, lasting only a few hundred thousand years, a short life for a star. More information here:
