LOVED this place. However, I'm giving one star because it's now only open for private parties/events. This was the only good place to dine ON the lake and still have amazing food. We came to Tahoe over July 4th hoping to relive our blissful salmon burger dining experience of 2012 and were highly disappointed. Hopefully someday they'll change back to regular lunch/dinner menu open to the public.

Went here for the first time last week. I should have known something was fishy (pardon the pun) when I called to make reservations, and the first thing I was asked was how I had heard about them, and the guy on the phone kept telling me what a wonderful experience we were going to have. It was a weird start. I was told we could sit either inside or outside, and we could choose when we arrived. Once we got there, we stood around for what seemed like a long time before we were welcomed. We told them we wanted to sit inside, but they had not prepared a table, so we had to stand around some more while the did that. Finally we were seated, but it took the waitress a long time to attend to us, even though the place was not too busy. Overall, the staff seemed somewhat lost, like they didn't really know how to run a restaurant. Finally they took our order. We asked about a kids menu, but they didn't have one on paper -- it was verbal only! We were brought some whole wheat dinner rolls while we waited, but I didn't enjoy them very much. They seemed store bought rather than homemade. We waited a LONG time for our meals to arrive. Most of us ordered the Oscar Salmon, which sounded good on paper, but turned out to be VERY disappointing. The salmon was tough and dried out. The asparagus was cold and very undercooked. The broccoli was warm and very undercooked. A few small pieces of roasted potato graced the plate, looking more like a decoration than something substantial to eat. The fish had something like a tablespoon of Bearnaise sauce, which, considering the high prices was very stingy indeed. My older daughter thought it was OK and finished her plate. My son, a ravenous teenager, will wolf down anything that's food! But my mom, dad and myself could not bring ourselves to eat more than half. My wife enjoyed her clam chowder and nice salad. My younger daughter had an excellent grilled cheese and fries. I (along with most of the others) would have very much preferred her grilled cheese over our horrible grilled salmon! We usually don't order dessert after a meal, but in this case we wanted to try to erase the bad memory of the Oscar Salmon. My Tiramisu was expensive ($9) but good -- it was almost all cheese and very little cake. A few of the others had Creme Brulee, which at $7 also was expensive (considering the small portion), but good. Two others had the equally expensive ($8) but good Chocolate Decadence. At least we ended on a somewhat good note. In the end, this bad dining experience cost us nearly $300 (for 4 adults, 2 teenagers and a child). You are most definitely paying for the lakeside view. You would be MUCH better off heading down the street to Lanza's Italian Restaurant for a great meal, and then taking a walk on the beach after dinner. We will never be returning to Captain Jon's.

This place was amazing, the food was good, service could have been a little better, a little pricey, but the location was worth the visit alone, great balcony over the lake. Love it!

I tell you, the view was the best. The service was the worst ever and the food was ok. The broccoli was under cooked. If I had to choose Captian jons and dog food, I would choose dog food.
