It's Nature's idea of the "fittest", not ours. Nature likes lots of variety, and a lifeform can get into a lot of trouble, if it tries to crowd out all the others...
 
It seems reasonable to conclude that humans the move to cities would have had major effects on our evolution. Population centres expose our species to such a variety of diseases that we have probably evolved our immune system a lot in the last 10,000 years.
