ANA President Responds to USA TODAY Column about Proposed VA APRN Rule
As you know, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has proposed a rule to allow APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education and training. On June 6, USA TODAY published an extremely negative op-ed about this important development by a physician that accused nurses of “acting like doctors.” In response, President Cipriano sent a letter to the editor that was published this morning in USA TODAY’s Opinion section. Read it here. USA TODAY edited the letter for space. The original version is attached for your convenience.
As a reminder, the 60-day public comment period on the proposed rule will end on July 24, 2016. We seek your assistance to ensure that the VA receives an overwhelming number of supportive comments to this rule to underscore the important role that ALL APRNs play in providing high-quality care to veterans. Colleagues:
Hopefully you will soon be receiving CALL TO ACTION information for SB 187 which I have sent to all the LSNA District Presidents. With that message, I have attached two documents containing contact information for the LA House of Representatives, as well as a few other talking points. But in the service of urgency and time, I am providing some information below, and asking that you begin contacting members of the House asking them to support this critical piece of nursing practice legislation. Last week the LSBN sent out a link to the LSNA/LANP Joint Statement which clearly demonstrates each organization's support for SB 187.

This is a critical piece of legislation affecting the practice of nursing in Louisiana, not just for current APRNs but those of you who are currently enrolled in graduate programs, as well as those of you who have set an advanced degree as an educational goal.

It is vital you to take the time to call your local Representative first, then call as many others in the House of Representatives as you can to seek support for SB 187. We are being told that the Representatives "aren't hearing from nurses on this issue", and you may rest assured that they are hearing from opponents of this bill. You can find contact information on https://www.legis.la.gov/legis/FindMyLegislators.aspx, As most of you know, the bill was again deferred last Wednesday, and it is scheduled to be on the House agenda for debate this Tuesday, May 31.

Thank you for your efforts with this opportunity to advocate for the provision of competent primary care to the people of Louisiana, as well as supporting the advancement of our profession.

Yours in Nursing,
Patricia A. La Brosse, PMHCNS-BC
