“KILLED ABROAD “
BBC ONE SCOTLAND
9pm Wednesday 18th July 2018

I am delighted to be involved in this one hour BBC Scotland documentary "Killed Abroad" which examines the homicide of Craig Mallon in Lloret de Mar, Spain in May 2012 and the suspicious death of Kirsty Maxwell in Benidorm, Spain in April 2017.

Two young lives tragically ended in unresolved circumstances in another country where they should have been enjoying holidays.

I sincerely hope that this documentary will influence people with answers both families so much need to come forward, I also hope the revelations in the documentary will influence the Spanish Authorities to investigate various issues which have not been progressed.

In addition to the case specific issues there are wider issues about how families like Kirsty Maxwell and Craig Mallon's families do not receive the same level of support as they would get if their loved ones died in the UK.

Hopefully as a result of the documentary some changes will be forthcoming to ensure that families unfortunate to find themselves in such terrible circumstances get the best possible joined up formalised support available and they are not abandoned to do their own investigations in other countries as has happened to Craig and Kirsty's families AND sadly many others.

The answers to who killed Craig and what happened to Kirsty are still out there, hopefully this documentary will help obtain those answers.

There is going to be a lot of marketing, media and social media activity regarding this documentary.

Can everyone please use all social media opportunities to help push awareness of this documentary which will be on BBC Scotland and available on the BBC iPlayer.

Thanks,

David

MURDERS AND SUSPICIOUS DEATHS OF UK CITIZENS ABROAD

Our Governments should be making sure that families of UK victims dying abroad as a result of homicide, suspicious or unexplained circumstances receive the same level of support as they would receive in the UK.

Sadly this does not happen with families being abandoned to finance and drive their own investigations and find their way through legal systems in other countries.

There are currently no joined up processes and even worse no system to hold countries accountable for apparently flawed investigations into deaths of UK Citizens like the Kirsty Maxwell suspicious death in Benidorm, Spain in April 2017.

There is a lot of good work ongoing including the All Party Political Group chaired by Hannah Bardell MP which hopefully will result in much needed progress.

When we see how other countries like Italy support their citizens we really have to ask why can the UK not do this?

AN EXAMPLE BEING:

The tragic death of Italian Citizen Martina Rossi in Majorca, Spain hopefully surely must have learning opportunities for UK Governments regarding support for Kirsty Maxwell's family and other UK citizens dying in similar circumstances.

" Two Men On Trial In Italy Over Death Of Martina Rossi In Palma In 2011
The trial of two men has begun in Italy, in connection with the the death of a tourist in Palma 7 years ago. Martina Rossi died after she fell from the 6th floor of hotel in Cala Major in August 2011. At the time police determined that it was a suicide but the prosecution claims new evidence proves she was trying to escape from an attempted rape by the two suspects."

https://www.mallorcasunshineradio.com/news/two-men-on-trial-in-italy-over-death-of-martina-rossi-in-palma-in-2011

These are Italian men appearing in an Italian court for a homicide of an Italian citizen in Spain.

The circumstances which were investigated by the Italian Authorities who were not happy with the outcome of the Spanish investigation.

Surely Britain should have similar arrangements for UK Citizens dying abroad in similar circumstances.

IF WE IN THE UK DO NOT HAVE SUCH LEGISLATION THEN THE POLICY MAKERS SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTING SUCH LONG OVERDUE CHANGES TO SUPPORT VICTIMS' FAMILIES

This was investigated as a potential #homicide by the police at the time however such a vital individual has not been interviewed or had her details taken.

Please take some time to view and share this full recording of the Adjournment Debate by Hannah Bardell MP which is a very powerful and emotional discussion about the need for Governments to provide much needed support to families of victims dying abroad as a result of murders, suspicious and unexplained deaths.
