We have long pushed for transparency so users can better understand the extent to which governments request their data—and Google was the first company to release numbers for National Security Letters. However, greater transparency is needed, so today we have petitioned the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to allow us to publish aggregate numbers of national security requests, including FISA disclosures, separately. Lumping national security requests together with criminal requests—as some companies have been permitted to do—would be a backward step for our users.

International media liaison Google Global Communications and PR team
  • Google
International media liaison, 2011 - present
  • BBC
Technology Correspondent for the BBC, covering Silicon Valley, 2011
  • LBC Radio, Radio Clyde, Radio Forth, Moray Firth Radio, BBC Newsbeat, Breakfast News, BBC Online
Basic Information
International Media Liaison at Google formerly BBC Tech corr in Silicon Valley
I am Google's international media liaison and part of the company's global communications team.  It is a new role for me and Google looking after foreign reporters and correspondents based in the US, east and west coast, as well as those who come from abroad to cover Google.  No day is the same as I work with journalists from Russia to Germany, Japan to France and Korea to the UK, or course.

Before that I was the BBC's first official appointee covering all things tech from Silicon Valley.  I worked for the website, BBC radio and television.

I was based in the Valley between 2000 and the end of 2004 as a freelance stringer working for newspapers, magazine and radio and online.

In between I was back in Scotland, again working for the BBC as a freelance anchor presenting various news programmes, an election series, a food programme and a couple of profile shows.

Other work stints include Radio Clyde, Moray Firth Radio and Radio Forth.

Highlights include interviewing Audrey Hepburn, Spinal Tap (thanks for the NewsBitch photo boys) a bit part in a kids tv programme (I used to get the odd cheque for repeat shows...alas no more) a role as a tv reporter in Irvine Welsh's Acid House movie and playing basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters!  And did I mention that Lloyd Cole and the Commotions video?
