"Arctic Light"

The guidebooks were right. You'll never forget your first sight of the Lofoten Islands in Norway. Watching a special quality of light play over picturesque villages, while razor-sharp peaks rise in the distance like a sleeping sea dragon, is truly unforgettable.

Candelabra Primroses

Primulas were once just flowers that I associated with late winter / early spring.  When I was growing up primroses and polyanthus grew prolifically in my grandad's garden.  They were one of the first flowers I grew myself as a child; the first plants that I learned how to divide and transplant ...with great results; with very forgiving leaves and roots around a gardener with little fingers.   Little did I realise back then how diverse the Primula family really was! Years later I grew them from seed after giving the seeds 'a taste of winter' in my fridge. But it wasn't until I moved to Perthshire that I had the opportunity to grow lots more hardy Primula species.  Ones that would flower not only in early spring but well into September!   Click to read the rest and see the photos on my blog.
If you've got heavy wet clay soil then Candelabra primroses will grow well in your garden. You can even have flowers from May until September if you choose the right plants!

THE LAST REMAINING EXAMPLE
Kevington, Victoria, Australia

'In the Goldrush Era in the 1860's, John and Mary Garrett travelled from Beechworth to the new find in the Upper Goulbourn Valley. They established themselves at a place then known as Macs Creek. In 1862 they opened on the banks of the Goulbourn River a beerhouse, simply known as Garretts Beerhouse.

As time went by, the beerhouse became known as the Kevington Hotel, as trade had been very good allowing John and Mary to establish the Hotel into a permanent stopover with accommodation available.

The Kevington Hotel is the last remaining example of a hotel built in the goldrush era of the 1860's in the Upper Goulbourn region.' [www.kevingtonhotel.com.au]   (1368)
