Using ADB to talk to your Android device

ADB is a surprisingly powerful tool to communicate between a PC and an Android device. What can you use it for? Read on...

When is the last time you backed up your phone? Never? What if it crapped out today, what would you lose? Do you really trust "The Cloud" with everything?

You can use ADB to backup pretty much any phone, no root required. However you DO need to enable developer mode and then enable USB Debugging. Though USB Debugging is usually enabled by default when you enable Developer Mode.

Also keep in mind that the way the ADB "push" and "pull" command handle paths and directories is a little odd so make sure you get a handle on that before you start dumping files.
For example, suppose you want to backup a the directory "/sdcard" on your phone. To do that, from Linux, you'd do the following.
adb shell ls / (to make sure /sdcard exists and is capitalized or not etc)
cd /place/I/want-to-backup-to/
mkdir sdcard
cd sdcard
adb pull /sdcard/ .

And away you go. Note the trailing "/" on the source path.
