How to boost your home’s curb appeal

It’s the first official week of Spring! You know what that means! No, not warm weather (come on, don’t you even know Cleveland’s Spring?)…home selling season! The nice weather brings out pretty pictures of homes, good weather to home shop in, and a ton of home listings coming up onto the market.

When it’s time to list your home for sale, you might start looking around and realizing how it will look in a listing. If it’s less than appealing—especially your curb appeal—you might want to make some changes before calling your realtor.

Curb appeal is important because first impressions are important. It is the first thing people see when they drive past your house or park in your driveway ready to walk in for their showing. If the curb appeal of your house isn’t great, they may walk into the house with prejudices against it.

So, how can you make your curb appeal more…appealing…you’re wondering? Go outside on a sunny day, and pretend like you’re a buyer who’s going to possibly be purchasing your home. Pay attention to what you’d pay attention to if you were the buyer.

1. Look up to the roof – Your roof is one of the most important things that a smart buyer will look at. Not only does it affect how the house looks (Who wants to buy a home with missing shingles or that looks like it needs a cleaning?), but it also affects the value of the home. Replacing a roof on a home you just bought is rarely on a new home buyer's wishlist, so they’ll want to make sure it looks nice. Give it a good cleaning, replace the missing shingles, or if necessary, do a full roof replacement or second layer. It may seem like a large investment, but it will allow you to sell your home for more and sell it more easily.
2. Paint your door – The front door shouldn’t be chipped with paint falling off or missing or be a dirty, bland color. Repaint the door (or replace the door altogether) a clean, eye-catching color that complements the house.
3. Pamper your fence or deck – Power wash your deck and fence to make it look fresh and new. When a buyer sees what the house looks like in its very best state, it no longer looks like a house that someone else owned but a clean slate that they can turn into whatever they want.
4. Siding – Speaking of power washing, don’t forget the siding. Clean what can be cleaned, repaint what needs it, and replace what needs to be replaced. If the siding is mangled or peeling, the house looks dingy and unappealing, and it’s one of the very first things that buyers notice.
5. Replace old gutters – Old gutters look bad and also cause the paint on the home to look bad, too. Low-maintenance gutters are ideal and will be a big selling point for buyers.

You can also do small things like put potted plants by the front door, tidy up the garden (please pull your weeds), and replace broken doorbells or knockers. Make sure the pictures that you take are in good lighting and at flattering angles, or have a realtor come in and take the photos for you prior to listing. Getting the buyers to the door is important, and when they like what they see, they’ll walk inside with hope for what the home is going to look like.

For roofing, roof repair, siding, and other exterior needs for your home to help get it ready to sell (or maybe for work on a new home that you just bought), call us at Triple Peaks Roofing for a free estimate.
