Tip 39/50: Learn How To Use Images Appropriately & Legally
There is a lot of confusion (at best) and ignorance (at worst) about the fair use of images on the web. If you use images in your posts, this is for you.

No Google+ post is complete without a head-turning image and recently +Richard Chignell asked me what the rules are behind using and sharing images, so I looked into it further and it turns out this is a huge, slightly grey-area topic. Here I have distilled my findings (so Richard, I hope this goes some way to answering your question!)

Did you know every image on the web is protected by copyright at time of creation and doesn’t require any particular registration of work or anything. All rights belong to the original creator of the image. (I didn’t, neither did these guys: http://bit.ly/1j3F5XB)

But we all need images for our posts, blogs etc. right? Under the Fair Use rule, most of these images (excluding stock images which require a licence fee) can be used for free in situations where the image compliments the post, isn’t edited beyond recognition and doesn’t negatively impact the originator in any way (this is just the gist, read more here: http://bit.ly/1eOnZdu).

However, you have to do your research. Sometimes these images will have information regarding their re-publishing and you must adhere to their rules or risk the punishment. If there are no clear publishing guidelines, or if you are in any doubt, get express permission to use the image or don’t use it at all.

Contrary to popular belief, crediting the originator with a link is not enough. This is a plagiarism issue, nothing to do with copyrights. As +Sara Hawkins says: “Just telling people who took the photo will not protect you if the author did not give you permission to use the image.” (more great information here: http://bit.ly/1iHH2Ha)

HOW CAN I FIND IMAGES TO USE?
There are several places where you can safely take images from:

Flickr has a search filter which, when activated will only return images that you can use under creative commons ruling (scroll to the bottom of here: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/). Each photo will have rules set by the photographer that should be adhered to ranging from attribution to non-commercial use (more: http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/).
► Likewise, Google Images has a search filter (click on “Search Tools” just below the search box and click the “Usage Rights” drop-down to filter images that are available for public use). It is very tempting to just use what you find here without asking questions but it is still advised that you contact the originator for permission.
Wikimedia Commons has a database of over 20 million free-to-use images searchable by topic (http://bit.ly/1gqCfb1)
Stock.xchg offers over 400,000 free photos and images to use any way you like (http://www.sxc.hu/)

I know +Dustin W. Stout is currently working on a comprehensive guide on this topic which I can’t wait to read - you can find the guide and link to first chapter here: http://dustn.tv/sharing-images-online.

This is just one of many Google+ tips, you can find more tips like this from the #googleplus50 series here:http://www.rickeliason.com/things-to-do-on-google-plus/
