Many of us grew up with the idea that the ideal home was a two-story house with a finely manicured lawn and a white picket fence surrounding the property. It’s been a fine goal for those living in suitable areas, but it’s not so easy for the rest of the world. Finding and building a home requires careful consideration of location, inhabitants, and building materials.

As our needs evolve, so do the homes we inhabit. Residences of the future
will need to be as sustainable to the environment as they are habitable for the people inside. Here are two stories of recent innovations that seek to make homes that are as good at preserving the environment as they are at protecting you from the elements.

Home and Auto

If there’s one thing the family home has in common with the family car, it’s that both have been yearning for alternative energy sources for some time. This need has inspired great strides in both areas, including a proliferation of solar-powered homes and hybrid automobiles.

The Oak Ridge National Lab recently threw its hat into the sustainable-housing ring with the debut of its

3D-printed house and car. The dual unit, known as AMIE (Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy), consists of a 28-foot-long solar-powered home and an electrically powered utility car. Both parts were 3D-printed, and were designed to be as physically strong as they are lightweight.

Although still in prototype mode, AMIE has already demonstrated its ability to remain “off the grid” for extended periods of time. The designers believe it’s only a matter of time before units like AMIE are used to keep homeowners energy-independent and fully protected from just about any weather concern.

Red Planet Residence

Mars has sure been in the news a lot lately, hasn’t it? With the release of Ridley Scott’s film

The Martian

and the news that

flowing rivers

exist on the planet’s surface, our closest celestial neighbor

deserves all the attention it’s getting. Visiting and inhabiting Mars has been staple science fiction for over a century. Now it’s one step closer to becoming science fact.

Mars being the only planet at a reasonable distance from Earth, it’s a prime piece of real estate. That's what led Foster + Partners, a world-renowned architecture firm, to design plans for

a permanent settlement

on the red planet. Through the use of semi-autonomous robots, the plan would 3D-print and build the habitat out of regolith, the soil and mineral found on the surface of Mars. After the regolith exteriors are finished, a high tech interior would be built.

Although neither of these innovations represents the traditional home as we were raised to think of it, that traditional style isn’t the only option any more. Homes can now be built in more exotic places, with a more diverse array of materials, and that can only be beneficial to a changing world. Foster + Partners' plan has already been
shortlisted by NASA as a major possibility for permanent human
colonization on Mars.
