How to build a planter for growing vegetables on a deck or patio.

This photo album documents the construction of my second planter, with instructions in the captions.

I can remember enough school German that this appears to me to be pretty funny...

The Muon g-2 superconducting magnet nearing the end of its journey from Brookhaven National Laboratory to Fermilab. It's parked during the day today in the parking lot of the Costco that I drive past going to and from work, and will be moving up the interstate past our neighborhood overnight tonight.

That needed one hell of a shrink wrap machine

Tom Skilling's Severe Weather Seminar starts in an hour; the auditorium is already about half-full. I think there's another G+ user a few seats behind me because the only other posting so far shows the same woman's hair in his photo...

Wow, it doesn't take long for people to join up; I only created this Community a few minutes ago and it already has 8 members.  Welcome to all, I hope this becomes a useful facility, although I think the tech-talk mailing list will continue to have a much larger audience.

What shortcomings are the most problematic for you? Feel free to message/email me personally, but maybe the discussion in the open would be helpful to others as well.

LabVIEW is really great for certain things. The main problem I'm having at the moment is their lagging Linux support and the high cost of the DSC(?) module that provides a lot of native EPICS interface.

There are few ways to interface LabVIEW and EPICS, some far better than others.

Oops. You'd think the TV companies might have filters for this kind of typo...

This looks like a really interesting game if you have young kids (or grand-kids) and want them to get an intro to programming without using a computer. This game may never be available anywhere else again, i think you only have a few days to jump in...

Half-time at Tom Skilling's Severe Weather Seminar after about 3 hours and 4 speakers - Dr. Uccellini on Superstorm Sandy, Dr. Schneider from the Storm Prediction Center, and Dr. Wuebbles on Severe Weather due to Climate Change, with Tom putting in a few things and a longer talk and highlights of his field trips since joining WGN. Coming up Ed Fenelon, Jim Allsopp and Brian Smith.

No, but we have a better one already, so we don't bother to enter — we'd rather not be woken up at 3am for every Amber alert or because there's a river 3 counties over which is about to overflow its banks!  If you don't have a weather radio though you should think about getting one, you shouldn't rely on being able to hear your town's tornado siren...

In the US daylight savings time #DST starts tonight. For some reason though both our Oregon Scientific temperature sensor which also has a radio clock and another radio-controlled clock-radio we own which is not shown here have decided to switch a day early. That's the Oregon on the right of this photo, alongside some other manually set clocks showing the right time. The Insignia/Chumby showing the cat clock is synchronized using NTP and is only a few milliseconds out. The time zone is correct, showing the Central zone. Did the WWVB radio source send out the wrong data?

I'm interested in IOC developers' opinions on some code changes to Base that I've just published on Launchpad at the link below. Unless you already have a Launchpad account and wish to comment there I'm happy to discuss this change here.

Google's campaign to stop the ITU from taking control of the Internet behind closed doors. I hope that a strong response to this petition will let Vint Cerf and Google show the ITU that the public is concerned about this issue and will stop them from breaking the world's open communications platform.

Sharing Connections is a great organization with small but a hard-working staff and many helpful volunteers. They will pick up certain furniture items within a limited geographical area (DuPage County), but the truck crew are all volunteers and their pickup schedule is often full up to 2 or 3 weeks out. Unfortunately there are people that try and take advantage of them — don't bother calling them if you need a pickup by tomorrow, or if your stuff isn't in good or excellent condition (the families that the furniture goes to don't have the resources or ability to fix it).
