Well, that "Hangout" was an epic failure... seems the Google video chat drivers don't like my integrated microphone.

Kudos to the folks on the Cyanogen teams working to keep our bargain basement Touchpads relevant by porting Android over to them. I've been running ICS on mine for a while, and now Jelly Bean is on it's way. Now if they could just get the camera and microphone to work in these builds, I'd be good to go!
Want the latest version of Android on your device? Sure, we all do, and despite HP having put the TouchPad out to pasture

THIS is why I have no degree... no seriously, it has nothing to do with starting college at age 16 with a love of incredibly cheap beer

Great to see continued strong support from the analysts for the Software AG SOA Governance solution!

The the "booth" demo will be tying webMethods Mobile Developer into the ESB, including Governance and Mediation of services exposed to the mobile user. I don't have the presenter list right now, but I believe we have a couple of customers doing case study presentations.

This optical illusion is so odd, because it seems plainly obvious that the two squares are different shades... right up until I block out the adjacent squares, and as I'm doing it, my eyes tell me that the "darker" square is lightening up.

Thanks to +Norman Ramsey for sharing this 3D recreation of Ted Adelson's famous checker-shadow illusion. Due to the beautiful complexities of the human visual system, two checkerboard tiles of identical luminance have different apparent luminance (or brightness). In a previous life, I kept a collection of such illusions on the door of my office to amuse and hypnotize colleagues. Some favorites are here:

Check out more trippy illusions on Ted's site:

Here's a mind-bending video in which someone created the famous checker shadow illusion in real life. The optical illusion takes advantage of the way our brains process lighting and shadows. As wit...

Wrote my first Android/iPhone app today! Admittedly, it's a sad little app, but it's mine. Now I just need to a.) Buy a Mac so that I can build and deploy it to my iPhone, or b.) Buy an Android phone to deploy it to from my laptop.

Ever heard of a dev tool called Bedrock from Metismo? It abstracts the native UI and coding components from a developer, allowing me to code a simple app, and then when it comes time to build it, it takes the abstracted code I've worked with, and cross-compiles it into the appropriate format for whatever mobile device I want to deploy the app on. So, for example, a date-control in the iPhone is the spinning wheel control, but on an Android, it looks like the native control there. I write it in java, and it builds the appropriate apk file for whatever Android devices I select, and also the cpp files for iDevices. So far I've done nothing but simple crap, but I expect I'll be doing more and more as the weeks go on now.

As a logical transition from my reading the "Comics" in the paper every Sunday growing up, reading PvP and Evil, Inc. online are now part of my daily routine. If you haven't already, I'd go to the PvP site, and check back through their archive of strips. I ended up reading them all over the course of a couple days... not during work hours, of course.
