Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia)

I cannot see violets without remembering my mom and the many bouquets of violets I picked for her when I was a kid! RIP, mom! And welcome to #wildflowerwednesday tomorrow.

I am super busy and tomorrow evening will be driving home from a recruiting trip on behalf of my university, but I'll get to your wildflower shares at some point! These little beauties were scattered across the woodland floor on my last outing with my camera on February 24.

What a lovely way to enjoy the equinox! Thanks to +Naturpunkt by Gina M. for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday.
The Rite of Spring ~ Equinox ~What does the term mean?
>Equinox is a Latin term that means “equal night.”< It happens when the sun shines directly on the Earth’s equator, providing equal amounts of day and night time to both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. March 20, 2017, is a date that most of us recognize as symbolic of changing seasons. As we welcome spring, people south of the equator are actually gearing up for the cooler temperatures of autumn.
Aside from the warmer weather and the budding flowers, the Northern hemisphere experiences later sunsets, while the opposite occurs for the Southern hemisphere_.

You Know You're in Chicago, #1

You know you're in Chicago when this studly torso lovely bas relief is on the outside of ____(name the building)__________?

Ok, Chicago peeps, the prize for playing along and getting at least one answer correct is one drink courtesy of moi at the March Dink 'n Click, on which occasion I will be in town. I will post up to 10 photo puzzles at unpredictable intervals between now and when I board my plane the 24th. :)

Ta dah! Just purchased by 2017-18 opera tickets! I will be in Chitown in October and December 2017 and March 2018. Yippeeee!

You know, somehow the name just fits this plant with its cool colors to a T. Lovely contribution to #wildflowerwednesday, +Bob Danley.
Folks, it's #wildflowerwednesday hosted by +Bette Kauffman and it is only 21 days until it is officially SPRING. Now it won't be long before Glacier Lily (Erythronium grandiflorum) carpets the forest floor in synch with the snow melt (Schiemann 2005)..

Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia)

Yeah! The first Red Buckeye bloom of the season! And it's here to remind you that tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday. I can hardly believe I have gotten reminder posts done two weeks in a row, but here you have it! So share your wildflowers in their natural habitats tomorrow.

And the story is...... two Fridays in a row I was able to sneak off in the afternoon and spend a couple of hours looking for wildflowers at my university's biological station, a 100-acre natural area in the Copenhagen Hills of Central Louisiana.

I went back last Friday because the previous Friday it was clear to me that I would see lots more Trillium in bloom and maybe some Red Buckeye. I was right on both counts! I have tons of Trillium shots and will share more of them weeks that I don't get into the field. But this is the one and only fully open Red Buckeye floret I saw! Flower spikes, yes, but all had only unopened buds except THIS ONE! And you can tell it couldn't have been open more than a few hours before I got there. LOVE this plant.

I also found tiny little violets in bloom, and I'll share one of those next week. But.... --and here's where I'm bursting with pride in the development of my ability to see and identify more and more plants--I also found four--FOUR--Cranefly Orchid sites. They are not in bloom, of course. They bloom in August. So I found them by identifying the leaves only!

You can tell I'm inordinately proud, right? And what is more, I marked the sites because when I go back in August, the leaves will be gone and the flower stalks are slender and the florets muted colors. But I will be able to find them. So... expect Cranefly Orchid shots in August, folks!

And in the meantime enjoy this little firecracker!
