My mentorship story
I entered medical school in 1996 with a vague interest in primary care.  During my M1 year, I focused more on my studies than on my career path, and sought to spend time with my wife (having just been married a month before m...

My first actual blog post since re-starting the effort:
(In response to Abraham Verghese's TED talk) Verghese's talk centers on the process of the physical exam, but I think the central themes are that of ritual and connection.  In the healing relationship that physicians (should?...

+Mark Ryan Nice honest post...what a way to come back, swinging for the fence!

Employers are seeing that 30-35% of their healthcare expense is going to towards administrative expenses. We have a bloated system in USA with many vested interest. Too many layers from employers' own HR to insurance, hospital administration, etc. adding little to no value rather leveraging enormous pressure on scared Doctor/Patient relationship.

Some thoughts on a long-delayed return to the blog:
Looking back at this blog, I am embarrassed at how long it has been since I have updated it.  Life has gotten so busy that I hardly ever think to jot down any thoughts here, even if I should have some thought I think worth sh...

[H]ere are 3 suggestions on how to provide personalized medicine right now:

1. Read the patient’s chart (paper or digital)

2. Listen to the patient

3. Look at the patient

While we're still waiting for the next technology to revolutionize healthcare, this article makes the compelling point that what we might need first, right now, is for doctors to listen to their patients better.

I personally witness a need for Drs/those of affiliated positions, to do better exams as well as listen more intently and order less tests.
