Ole Miss v. Texas Game Day Activities!

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering invites students, family members, staff, faculty, alumni, and students to the Department’s tent for Saturday’s game day activities: “Ole Miss vs. Texas.”

Special events this week:

First, Dr. Holt has already started the BBQ and will have brisket served by around 2pm on Saturday.

Second, from about 2-3pm Adjunct Professor Dennis Powers will be looking to meet with students of Engr 691, Sec, 46, “Sedimentology of Shale and Mudrocks” for their initial course meeting.

Next, from 3-4pm, Mr. Stuart Coleman an alumnus now working as a Petroleum Engineer with Chevron has agreed to meet with current students interested in the petroleum industry or in graduate studies. Stuart is one of our graduates (B.S.G.E. 2008) who later completed a graduate degree in some state between Louisiana and New Mexico). This is a chance to learn from one of our former students who has blazed an interesting and rewarding path.

From 2pm to about 7:30pm we welcome all to come enjoy some fantastic BBQ. Be warned, however, that more than one Texan will be at our tent from time to time. It could get interesting, but is sure to be fun!

Introduction

The Geology and Geological Engineering program at The University of Mississippi is the largest GGE program in the nation and is continually growing.  The mission of the GGE program here at Ole Miss is an outgrowth of and consistent with The University of Mississippi Mission.

It is our objective to prepare graduates who will serve the needs of the nation and the world in geology and geological engineering related fields. Past graduates of the program have found professional positions in a range of industries including i) geotechnical, ii) geoenvironmental, iii) geospatial information science and technology, iv) graduate education, v) earth resources extraction, vi) environmental, vii) hydrology and vii) graduate education. Future graduates are expected to serve the same range of industries. The objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Geology and Geological Engineering programs are to prepare graduates who early in their careers (3 to 5 years after graduation) find that they are:

· Capable of engaging in productive careers as professional geological engineers with continuous professional growth along their chosen career path;

· Capable of applying fundamental mathematics, chemistry, and physics in professional practice or graduate study in geological engineering or a related discipline;

· Capable of applying the engineering sciences, geological sciences, and geological engineering design fundamentals that are the core of the geological engineering profession;

· Benefitting from the liberal arts component of their education and find that it his has helped to make them capable of effective written and oral communication;

· Capable of using modern technology and modern scientific and engineering in their professional practice, and prepared to engage in lifelong learning to remain vital in the profession; and

· Able to design and communicate creative solutions to practical problems that are effective, ethical, environmentally sound, cognizant of public safety requirements, and economically feasible.
