The jelly belly, beer gut, spare tire and the muffin top are all silly and playful terms that refer to the excess stomach fat so many of us despise. Just because this belly fat has some sweet terms of endearment does not mean that it’s something to overlook. Not only is it unattractive and inconvenient, but belly fat is the WORST kind of fat for us to have on our bodies! Here are a few reasons as to why you should fight the belly fat:
Belly fat is linked with dangerous disease
Heart disease, inflammation, high cholesterol, stroke and diabetes are just a few of the life-altering illnesses that can come from body fat in your midsection.
Waist size could indicate dangerous belly fat
Check yourself. You may be considered “in-shape” in the majority of places your body could be storing fat, but your belly could be holding your dangerous weight. If you are a man who is measuring a belly over 40 inches or a woman measuring a belly over 34 inches, you are considered obese and are definitely more at risk for contracting the previous mentioned diseases as opposed to someone measuring a waist that is smaller. You might not be considered obese in terms of your weight, but you could be terms of your waist.
Risks of death are associated with that belly fat
A recent study showed that a male with a normal weight but who still carries around belly fat has an 87% increased rate of dying in comparison to someone who does not carry excess amounts of belly fat. Women have an increased death rate of 50%.
Your internal organs are at risk
Belly fat is incredibly harmful because of how close it is to your body’s internal organs. Belly fat is also known as visceral fat. Visceral fat is located deep in the abdomen. The blood that circulates through the visceral fat, flows directly into your liver. The fatty acids from this visceral fat can increase your risk of fatty liver disease.

Keeping a diet high in fiber rich foods and very low in trans fats and saturated fats will help you keep a closer watch on the dangers of visceral (belly) fat that could develop if you were instead to continue eating badly. Also keeping an active lifestyle with daily cardiovascular exercise will work with your healthy diet in keeping your jelly belly at bay.
