The best antennas for hand helds just may be slim jims but most are roll up antennas and require some sort of support. When properly supported they can easily get 92 km range as I know, I have done it from my basement to a distant ham repeater on a mountain a good distance away. I more recently made up a slim jim out of 450 ohm ladder line and put it inside a length of white sched 20 (thin) PVC pipe. it would work inside the pipe or outside but there was a 1 cm difference in the feed point so need to keep that in mind for future slim jim constructs. I spray painted the PVC with black paint. White PVC is mean to be buried for sprinkling systems and does not stand up well to UV rays from the sun. I know that this is not a highly portable antenna like a rubber duck but a lady I provided a roll up slim jim refuses to use her old rubber duck and can no longer find it. Thanks for all those antenna comparisons. Oh, I forgot to mention. A friend had a broken rubber duck and wanted a cheap antenna. His connection was a BNC type. I made up a 1/4 wave antenna for him out of thin copper coated welding rod. The rode was soldered to the center pin and then assembled into the BNC base and then the open cavity at the top of the connector was simply filled with hot melt glue. Presto, he was on the air and the new one was as good as the store bought one. The main difference was that it was no longer flexible. 73 everyone / VA7DH
