Honestly, I have to disagree about your point with classes. One of FF7s greatest flaws came from how generic the characters were in battle.
Outside of Limit Breaks there were little reason to use certain characters. I'd like to see the cast specialize a bit, like FF10. This way each party member excels under certain situations (eg. Barrett for flying monsters, Tifa with high accuracy, Cloud for high defense monsters) but let the materia system help break limitations as the game progresses.
This would help balance materia and give you a reason to use the cast to their fullest potential.
I'd also like them to consider moving to a four or five person party or the hot swapping function they used in FF10.
