Google Allo's neural-network-powered emoji.

Thanks for the hair, but as I understand it, they just use one of their pre-trained CNNs for feature classification (based on human rating) to put together a combination of artist-drawn facial components. So why are people so stoked about it?

Finally it is out! Of all my publications this was the toughest one. By far. But at the same time it is the work I am most happy with.

We have decided to write the story up in 2013. Since then we have sent back and forth a few thousand emails, had some face-to-face meetings, spent many nights in front of our computers, discussed many hours on skype, had supercomputers run for countless hours, and also did some more experiments.

Was it all worth it? In terms of efficiency probably not, but I am really happy with the result, we have developed such a detailed understanding of a chemical reaction, and it turned out to be a really nice complete story. Would I do it again? Yes! - If it is necessary :)

Thanks to everyone who was involved and made this work possible - Alejandro Pérez Paz, Sebastian Wickenburg, Hsin-Zon Tsai, Dimas G. De Oteyza, Aaron J. Bradley, Miguel M. Ugeda, Patrick Gorman, Han Sae Jung, Michael F. Crommie, Angel Rubio, Felix R. Fischer.

"I love it when a publication comes together." - adapted from Hannibal Smith, The A-Team.

Email statistics

I have made a simple script to analyze your email behavior: Statistics for the day of the week, as well as for the time of the day are shown in violin plots and bar plots.

You can easily include some more filtering, e.g. by recipient/sender, subject, email folder, using pandas' rich methods.

Done with pandas/seaborn/matplotlib. There are really great free tools for data exploration and data science out there!

You can my the GPL'd script here: https://github.com/alexriss/email-stats

Have been playing around with pandas/seaborn recently. There are really great free tools for data exploration and data science out there.

Some quick hackathon led to this analysis of a few years worth of emails in my gmail account.

On the cover of ACS Nano

A prototype of a molecule/graphene device. The work shows that back-gated graphene device can be used to switch between two different electronic states of adsorbed organic molecules (the LUMO and the LUMO+1)
