Components represent deployments. It is possible to deploy the same functionality "more than once" in a system. Consider a system that measures pressure using multiple, separate pressure transducers. Here we show a deployment with two "service PIO" components (as component references).

PIO - In the original Shlaer-Mellor literature, PIO (Process Input/Output) was modeled as a separate domain. This is good practice. In the real world, the hardware is often surrounded by a "driver layer" or "hardware abstraction layer". This means the same thing as PIO.

Identifiers and Referential Attributes (aka IDs and Referentials, Keys and Foreign Keys)

Class identifiers and referential attributes are useful within class models and modeling from at least three perspectives: Model (the artifact), Modeling (the process), Architecture (the implementation). Separation of concerns is a virtue in domain modeling. Polluting one domain with information from another domain is discouraged. The role of identifiers and referential attributes differs between the application being modeled, the process of modeling that application and the architecture that implements the application.

Online Courses and Tutorials

If you want to learn more about xtUML, there is a series of dozens of short videos explaining many aspects of the Method and the Tool. The videos are not super high production quality; you can tell that they were produced by engineers. :)

https://xtuml.org/learn/on-line-courses/
Note, you need a user ID on the xtuml.org site to take the course. All of the videos are on youtube (search "xtUML").
