Operation: 8GZ E Drive
Objective: Set the San Diego record for most L8 portals in a day
April 20, 2013
148 unique Enlightened L8 portals
195+ L8 portals
150 miles travelled
Back story – Since the beginning of 2013, San Diego has been Resistance dominated. Outnumbered at least 2 to 1, our Enlightened agents have had to utilize the guerilla tactics of flash farming, hacking enemy portals, selective portal takedowns and mentoring to grow under the tyranny of the Resistance players. Our high level agents were constantly outnumbered and fighting supply shortages for months. We had finally had enough.
Fed up with being the constant underdog, by the end of March we finally had enough L8 Agents to pull off a large operation. This caused the birth of the idea of our all day event, Operation 8GZ’s E-Drive.
It started with a joke, a dream per se, of turning San Diego’s largest, most dense farm, Balboa Park, in to a giant L8 farm. After one particularly costly Balboa Park battle in March, our inventories were depleted and we dreamed of the idea of being able to fight back and have the supplies to go toe to toe with their strongest agents and win. Quickly this dream grew not only from enlightening Balboa Park but to enlightening our whole city. Our community was set ablaze with ideas until we finally settled on it. April 20, 2013 was the day that we circled for Operation 8GZ’s E-Drive. As a decoy we also launched a secondary event, the All Green Initiative. This event was announced to the lower level Enlightened community 48 hours before Operation 8GZ’s E-Drive in an attempt to keep the Resistance players on their toes. This allowed for decoy mini farms to sprout up across San Diego that we could roll through and quickly upgrade.
Many of us committed to the whole day while others met along the way. The mission was to start at 5am and go until we had set the local record for most L8 portals in a day. Our secondary goals were to farm and also to finish one of our newest player’s 15 day ascent from Level 1 to Level 8, all while not getting caught or tailed by the over-eager Resistance players.
We are pleased to report that not only were we successful in our primary objective but also our secondary objectives as well. The following is a timeline of our mission.
0300 hours – Monitoring
Checking the intel maps, we see that Resistance agents were active in our starting place of Balboa Park. Knowing their agents are prone to late night hacking runs, we keep a close eye on the map and COMMS for any compromising activity.
0500 hours – “Go time”
Balboa Park – 45 portals
Starting Agents: anderman, Blacksun619, Bivio, CJTC, dleu, draxil, iRefugee, lylonius, killatactics, tjmartian, Mercator (L7 at the time), MrManderson, TheSmurfHunter, Yenool, JimRaynor and Ranvier
Our Starting Agents met before sunrise at San Diego’s biggest farm, Balboa Park. The night before Resistance had turned it in to an L7/8 farm so we had our work cut out for us. Systematically we worked our way across the park and turned the whole park in to an L8 farm while our L7 linked everything. This was our largest Enlightened farm to date. Surprised that our enemies hadn’t showed up yet we moved on to our next target, Chicano Park.
Chicano Park – 19 portals
As we arrived to the next target, we found ourselves in the middle of a low rider show. The streets were blocked and cars were covering the park as we started enlightening the area. As we finished this farm, the most notorious local resistance player started destroying our portals. It was at this point that we knew that we knew we no longer possessed the element of surprise and our plans to stay in front of them had to go in to play.
Harbor Drive/Downtown San Diego – 23 portals
Knowing the low rider show would slow down the tailing resistance player, we decided to take a risk of going to the next closest farm, Harbor Drive/Downtown. Only 15 minutes away, we started turning Harbor Drive in to an L8 farm. We reached the end of the portals and headed downtown.
As we started turning the densest block of downtown, we had 3 resistance agents hot on our tails. As we finished the block we physically saw at least one of the resistance agents destroying our most recently converted portals. This sparked our next phase of our plan; heading 45 minutes north to our next set of portals and a much needed breakfast break.
Encinitas – Breakfast and 5 portals
Added Agents: scribbs and Poepp77
Split Agents: JimRaynor, Ranvier and TheSmurfHunter
After eating breakfast and being able to recuperate, we turned the downtown Encinitas portals to L8’s. After checking the COMMS to see that our enemies were finishing Balboa Park, we decided to head east to Grape Day Park while a fellow Enlightened L8, ISOBLAZED, converted the Carlsbad and Oceanside farms to throw off resistance players.
Grape Day Park – 19 portals
Knowing that Resistance had to be on high alert, we expected that Grape Day Park was going to be defended. We found our suspicions to be true. Deciding that there were too many portals to pass up, we overpowered the singular resistance defender and farmed.
Mira Costa College – 12 portals
Split Agents: Draxil, lylonious, Poepp77 and scribbs
Having to leave early, Draxil provided the perfect decoy by heading south as we headed northwest to Mira Costa College. Along the way we checked the Intel map and saw that our favorite, over-ambitious resistance agent had headed to the farthest farm north – Oceanside – and converted one portal there. Armed with this knowledge, and having run in to no problems from resistance at Mira Costa College, we decided to head back south to Balboa Park.
Balboa Park – 16 portals
Deciding to turn the densest portion of our original farm before heading east, were able to farm and burn it out before resistance showed up. To throw off resistance, we headed east to the backyard of one of resistance’s more notorious agents.
El Cajon – 10 portals
Added Agents: UnkleQuacker
Coming off a planned “quiet time” of eating dinner, we enlightened El Cajon and to our surprise, did not meet the opposition there. We moved west.
Grossmont - 6 portals
With our recent success, and in the name of efficiency, we hit our smallest farm of the day. Again, to our surprise, we did not meet any opposition. Knowing that we were being watched, we headed to north west to Pacific Beach.
Pacific Beach – 11 portals
Added Agents: Illyria and murattas
Split agents: UnkleQuacker
At this point we started to hit the fatigue of a long day. We decided that, after turning half of Pacific Beach, we needed to utilize the last of our energy and head back to Balboa Park.
Balboa Park – 29 portals
Utilizing the last of our energy, we turned as much of Balboa park as we could before resistance showed up. The highlight of this was our L7 was able to reach his L8, and complete the 500k AP he needed on the day, due to the resistance attack.
The day was a fantastic effort and day by enlightened agents. We successfully armored up so we can spearhead efforts across San Diego and liberate it from the oppression of Resistance control.
Notable mentions – Throughout the day we did have support from some other enlightened players as they worked the most active farm in San Diego, Mira Mesa. These agents were the aforementioned Illyria, murattas along with Kadia and TPod. Also, on our second pass through Balboa Park we ran in to emmylou and wakkow faithfully participating in the All Green Initiative.
